Season 2 - Confronting: Columbine

The events of April 20th, 1999 shaped our nation and altered the American narrative. One of America’s deadliest school shootings took place in a small town in Colorado, leaving thirteen dead and another twenty-one severely injured. And it was all broadcast over national tv for the nation to see.

The second season of Confronting takes on one of the most prolific tragedies in American history: the Columbine High School massacre. It was a devastating example of how easily a place of learning, familiarity and peace can descend into a war zone of chaos in a moment, the teenagers present that day are now adults who bear the mental and physical scars of the carnage they lived through. Amy Over, a Columbine survivor who is still living with its aftermath and raising her own children in its shadow, confronts many of the realities, questions and myths that surround the massacre to this day. Amy, through her own experience and by speaking with survivors, investigators, classmates, reporters on the scene and other important voices, brings a first-person account of the physical, emotional and spiritual journey that comes along with confronting the worst day of her life.

Season 1 - Confronting: O.J. Simpson

25 years after the crimes that ignited the "Trial of the Century" Kim Goldman, sister of murder victim Ron Goldman, is digging deep into the vicious crime that changed her life, and many others, forever. Thrust into the public eye at the age of 22, Kim was devastated when OJ Simpson was found not guilty of the murders of his ex-wife Nicole and her brother Ron. There has been much debate and confusion about what really happened the night of those brutal murders and for the first time Kim gets answers to questions that have been haunting her since the trial. She sits down with prosecutors, investigators, and witnesses who never got to speak and jurors who voted not guilty. In this 10-part series, Kim takes you on a journey as she reclaims and reflects on the part of her life that was changed permanently.

Have been finding this fascinating. The story of the those who were there need to be told. Not just the killers. Will it be finished?

    Great Season
The Columbine school shooting shook my world when it happened. I was in 8th grade in a small town in Wisconsin and never thought something like that was even possible. This event is what made me become more aware of my surroundings at all times. Even at the age of 13. My heart goes out to all of the victims in Littletown.

Call it “Confronting Whether or Not Amy Was on a List”
While the interviewed parties stories are harrowing, interesting, and necessary, Amy’s incessant search to see if she was on a hit list is absolutely grating. There is so much information the public could have, and should have, learned from this show. But the absolute narcissistic search for personal validation by Amy is almost unlistenable. The need for information for personal healing is important and I support that, but that should not have been what this podcast was about. How editors and the co-host could listen to these episodes and think “yeah, this is good content” is beyond me. This podcast “confronted” nothing. It says it will, and some of the interviews talk about their own personal confronting of issues later down the road, the show misses the mark on that front. Amy would have been best served as an interview of this podcast, not the host. I’m sorry for what happened to her, but this is not her lane.

    Couldn’t Finish It
I was really excited about this pod until I started listening. Poor production: The audio quality is so spotty and the interview questions being injected into conversations makes the whole thing sound off. When it comes to sound effects and music, less is more. You use the dramatic woosh sound so many times it loses meaning. The ads are completely jarring - one simple call for donations per ep would have been much more appropriate for something like this instead of Ryan Reynolds pitching a cell phone plan.. Poor editing: Why on Earth are Amy and Zack STILL talking about being on a supposed “hit list” when in the previous episode with Dave Cullen, he completely shuts down that whole narrative. We know what their plan was and it wasn’t to hunt down basketball players, they wanted to kill as many people as possible. Sorry the FBI got in your head, but come on, I’ve seen dozens of scribbled out yearbook photos over the years. This podcast would have really benefited from a well scripted narrative interlaced with interviews instead of Amy just rambling on and on - sometimes repeating herself - like when she’s memorializing the victims and says “always had a smile on” about three students.

    Great podcast!
The Goldman family is amazing. They have handled themselves in such a classy way since OJ slaughtered Ron and Nicole. This podcast is another perfect example them reminding people who Ron was.

    Host
Terrible host, you can tell Amy's story was prerecorded and the host edited questions in to make it seem like an interview.
  • Rebelman_314
Amy is bit of a narcissist
Amy routinely says her parents weren’t there for her or that others moved on and she was left behind. Wrong, she herself says her parents were there for her but after all the students including the ones who ACTUALLY got shot moves on, she complains no one wants to stay wallowing in self pity like her. And who announces her as the self promoted speaker for all the senior class? I had to turn this off. Did she make money off this podcast. She’s literally going back walking through the school as if she has far worse traumatic experience than others who had it far worse.

    Bad
There’s a lot of misinformation in this podcast. The host was obviously a well liked, popular person in high school and completely denies any form of bullying at Columbine which just isn’t true. The part at the memorial site is especially painful. It felt very exploitative and cheap. She’s really trying to push a specific narrative.

    Excellent information from the source
    Unparalleled access to Columbine information.
  • Tired of the baloney
    What a clueless podcast.
This is just pitiful. This podcast is so unaware of the real situation of Columbine, the failures by the police, the coverup, the reasons, and the environment at that toxic school. I know. I lived this and researched this for years. Some of the staged events on this podcast are maddening. Reviewing the “hit list” with Kate is laughable. There are many sides to the Columbine tragedy. This is one of them: The entitled and clueless side of the tragedy. If you are interested, read and learn about the real causes of these shootings, learn about hypervigilance and violentization. Learn how humiliation creates hate and anger. Suggested reading: Violence by Gilligan. When A Child Kills by Mones. Why They Kill by Richard Rhodes. There was no “confronting” of anything
This podcast was incredibly disappointing. The entire thing was the story of a super popular columbine athlete and her guests who also agreed with her that the school was perfect. According to this podcasts, everything was wonderful at the school! Of course, she doesn’t talk to (or make more than one quick mention of) any of the majority of students who didn’t love the school. Most of her friends who she interviews come off as the “cool” kids, who mostly just mock the groups of kids the shooters came from. They seem mean and unlikable, as does the host in many instances. All of these episodes, and you couldn’t find ONE single person who didn’t have an “amazing” experience at this high school, that was known to be rife with bullying and athlete favoritism? If you are someone who has read a lot about Columbine, this podcast will really shed no light on a real picture of the school. The only reason I gave any stars is because of the awesome teacher from Parkland, who gave an incredibly clear and thoughtful recounting of the shooting there. I’d love to hear her do an entire series!

    We The Jury
I listened to this episode because I wanted to know what jury members thought, but I also wanted to see how Kim Goldman would receive the information. I understand her grief, but if you are going to host a podcast and host these interviews, she did not need to be hostile. We understand you lost your brother and that grief will never go away; however, if you are interviewing people and asking why a jury member voted Not Guilty, it will be best if you listened and consider their perspective and not as the grieving sister whose been upset at all parties involved for over 25 years.
  • Unfortunately 2A
    Unfortunate
What happened was unfortunate. What the survivors live with is unfortunate. The easy “escape” these coward killers left this earth is unfortunate. The anti gun theme is also unfortunate. I have family that was saved because of the 2A and it’s also unfortunate we can’t have a real debate on how to save lives because of anti 2nd amendment people. They politicize every tragedy and that is…. Unfortunate.

    Season 1 was great, S 2 ok
I really enjoyed Confronting OJ, because I felt like it told a story the media never told in the 90’s. With Confronting Columbine, I did appreciate the perspective of survivors, but felt that really fell short when confronting why school shootings happen. There doesn’t seem to be any appetite to challenge the narrative that school shootings will just happen so we need to be prepared for them. How about asking the question of how we can change society for the better and stop mass shootings? The lack of discussion about how gun access specifically increases the gun violence and mass shootings in America was off-putting. Great forum for this discussion but it was completely left out.

    Remembering
I live near St Louis Mo. I did not know anyone from Columbine. On April 20th, my beautiful Columbine flowers bloom and I offer up a prayer for all of you and unfortunately all the others who’s lives have been affected by school shootings since then. Maybe one day laws will change.

    2nd listen
This is my second listen to Ms. Goldman’s podcast. It brought me to tears. Ron was so loved and this podcast brought out the profound loss of son, brother and friend. A huge loss for both the Goldman and Brown families.

    Tears to blood boiling!
You’ve done an amazing job showing all aspects of your brothers murder. I don’t think I could be as strong or as classy as you if it were my brother. You’re amazing & I know your brother is beaming over you! My job is one where I talk with a lot of people’s personal problems & I will take from your podcast a new understanding on how to talk to people. I’ve dealt with my own grief & try to use mine as a way to communicate to their griefs. I’ll now be using yours as a guide as well.
  • GracieReeds1997
Minus one star bc there’s no reason to put any blame on the parents of the shooters
This podcast was extremely well done. Amy is so brave for for opening up this chapter of her life and speaking about what happened to her and the other victims of the columbine shooting. The only issue I have with the podcast is that Amy seems to put blame on the parents of the shooters, saying that they should’ve known what their kids were up to and that they should’ve gone through their kids’ rooms because she does that with her teenagers. Have some empathy for those poor parents. They had no clue their children were capable of something so terrible and it will haunt them for the rest of their lives. One of the shooters even stated in the basement video that he put on a show every day pretending like he loved and cared about his family. How were they supposed to know what he was really thinking? AND even if they had gone through their children’s rooms, those two boys were sick in the head. Nothing their parents could’ve done would’ve stopped them. They are just as much victims as everyone else.

What an amazing sister and person. Strong, forgiving, and articulate! I hope this journey has helped you. You did a great job.

    Eye opening…
Amy I have cried with you and laughed with you. I am from Campbell county Tennessee. We had a school shooting in November of 2005 it was just one kid with a gun he killed 1 and injured 2 so it was nothing compared to what y’all dealt with I was in the 6th grade when it happened so I was not at the high school where it happened. But growing up I always wanted to become a cop. I became a school resource officer with the sheriffs office and I am not kidding at all when I say we will get a message every school year on 4/20 to keep an eye out for copy cats. It has impacted the whole nation. Even my little county in East Tennessee. I hope you continue doing good. Stay strong.

This is an okay listen. It started out really great but as the episodes went on, it started to lack something and I started to lose interest.

    Amazing Podcast
Season 1 Kim is an amazing podcast host and she really should do more of these! She is such a natural and my heart always went out to Ron’s family and how he was just completely swept under the rug and not given justice. I really hope more seasons are to come of Confronting and more stories and perspectives to be told. Also, season 1 Episode 6 that phone call is disgusting on Malcom’s end. Nancy is my hero, and I find it so ironic that Malcom says Kim is not a professional and fame hungry YET he basically only wanted her to interview him if he gets either money or notoriety on twitter. He’s desperate for money and may he and OJ rot down under. Season 2 I’m finishing Confronting Columbine and this podcast really hit me hard especially with the most recent mass shooting in Texas. I really liked how it fully analyzed all aspects and factors involved in Columbine and mass shootings in general. People are being too harsh towards Amy and lost sight that this is her story as well and not just about Columbine but how it affected her as well. It made me really think how we forget survivors and now with all of these young kids who have witnessed horror, it made me realize that they have to live with this trauma the rest of their lives and it will always affect them.

    Confronting…
Really good 1st Season. Changed some preconceived notions and really gained new appreciation for Ron Goldman RIP and especially Kim Goldman for taking us on this 25yr journey and his Father Fred Goldman. Season 1 Confronting OJ was really hard to find despite a concerted podcast search since it is “buried” behind Confronting Columbine and whatever Season 3 has to offer will do the same to Confronting Columbine. Please separate into individual podcasts.

    Healing and Cathartic
I wasn’t part of a miss shooting but Columbine happen the same year that I was a Junior in High School.. the amount of fear and anxiety I felt was real the remainder of my high school experience. I remember when the Asst Principal from the High School in Pearl Ms came to our school my senior year I felt safe bc I felt like he lived through a shooting. He would know how to help us prevent this from happening. I see now that was naive but it was powerful to my teen brain… listening to how these survivors have over come their trauma is inspiring and they should be proud of their journey! Powerful and riveting is all I can say! The Healing I can hear in this podcast is Cathartic for me! Thank you!

    Season 1 Amazing
Coming late to Season 1 but it’s outstanding. Thought I’d heard it all about this trial but so many insightful points. Awed by Kim for her bravery and tenacity.

    Confronting OJ
Kim Goldman did such an amazing job telling her brothers story and I wish I could give her family a hug. They family didn’t get any justice simply because of who her brothers killer was and that is absolutely horrible.

    Columbine…wow
I was in high school on 4/20/1999. I remember the events from seeing it on the news. But this podcast was so eye opening. Thank you all so much for sharing your stories. I cried with you and laughed with you. I never went through anything like this but we were all Columbine that day. Much love to you all.

    Confronting Columbine
I thought this season was good- Columbine happened on my 6th birthday and so it has always been something that I have researched and been interested in learning more about. What I didn’t expect was the occasional moments where I would totally burst into tears. It really touched my heart and gave me a bigger perspective on the trauma. What a terrifying day and I can’t imagine what they went through. My heart broke as I listened to their first hand accounts. I really enjoyed it and was excited when they added new episodes. I do agree with what a lot of peoples opinion on Amy but at the same time, this event happened to her. A lot of it is her relating to the speakers. I don’t really think that putting a liberal spin on this series with anti-gun laws and politics was necessary and I’m so glad they didn’t go that route. I don’t think a podcast with such a sensitive topic should be turned into a political stage. The title is confronting columbine, which in my opinion means confronting what they went through and working through that.

    Confronting OJ
Really found the podcast eye opening. I never heard much about Ron and your family. I didn’t even realize they weren’t dating. The messages on Ron’s answering machine were so beautiful and heartbreaking.

    Mixed emotions
I learned so much more info regarding the OJ trial/murders that I wasn’t aware of before. I think Kim does an amazing job of honoring her brother. I cannot imagine how hard it was/is to have a loved one’s death overshadowed by a celebrity making her tragedy almost a footnote in the story. Kudos to Kim for being the bigger person and staying professional during every interview, even the tough ones. The season about Columbine is very interesting and offers up a lot of information and insight from different parties involved, however the host was not the right choice. Amy is almost reveling in the fact that she was there, and continually brings up the fact that she’s on this “list” as if that makes her more intimately involved in the tragedy. She’s hard to listen to as she brings everything back to her. It’s comes across as disingenuous and a little self obsessed.
  • mmmsophisticatedmama
    Good for the history
S2E5 is cringe. The fed interviewed wants gun control instead of getting to the real issues. Kids are raised by single mothers and are godless. That’s the root of it. Not guns existing. We don’t live in a “gun culture” now- we’ve had guns here since before 1776. The reporter is annoyingly boisterous for such a solemn topic.
  • Lawman2013
Good info about columbine, but ignore Amy
I liked getting more info on Columbine. However, Amy desperately tries to make this podcast about herself. Here are some examples, when survivors are talking to her and getting emotional, Amy is quick to bring up what is happening in her life now (example: her mom has stage four cancer). That has NOTHING to do with Columbine. Next, she even states that this podcast is going to be about HER. I don’t think that she realizes nobody is listening to this podcast to learn about her. We want to learn about Columbine. Other than that, it’s a good podcast. The production is excellent. Just next time, pick a better host.
  • ktkla
    Pass
Not what I expected. I’m tying to have compassion for the main host but I just don’t relate to her. I find her perspective interesting but deeply shallow/one dimensional. Hope making this podcast was therapeutic for her but I don’t recommend listening to it. Watch the old school Michael Moore doc bowling for Columbine if you are looking for more Depth.
  • Jennifer224
    Listen beyond Amy
I learned a lot about what happened at Columbine and about what the surviving victims went through. However, Amy seems to have never grown up. We all know she’s going to be 40! She was told she was in a list (she was….she was a jock). She was very narcissistic and everything she said sounded very scripted and produced. She’ll even tell you this podcast is about her making peace with her past. I have not listened to the OJ season and most likely will not I found this very interesting because this happened during my freshman year and it changed my school too. My senior year started with the acts of 9/11. Trauma and scary events were just apart of my high school years.

Season 2: Good content, insufferable host
The interviews with victims were harrowing and the range of different experts impressive and informative, because of that I did listen to the whole season. That being said, this season is borderline unlistenable due to the host’s lack of interview skills and need to incessantly circle back to herself in the middle of every conversation. It is less about Confronting Columbine as it is about Amy’s anecdotes about high school, and holy cow she does not stop talking about being on the killers’ hit list. I wish Amy were just one survivor that was interviewed for this podcast rather than the host. Her background as a popular high school basketball player who was close with victim, Coach Sanders, would have been more impactful as one perspective out of many than a constant crutch throughout the podcast. Tentatively, I would say season 2 is still worth a listen, but probably while doing other things so as to tune out parts where Amy begins to talk rather than listen during interviews.
  • hatenewsnapchat
    Loved Season One
GREAT PODCAST, loved season 1 so was excited to listen to season 2. The content was great and I learned a lot. I understand Amy has gone through trauma and she’s the narrator so it’s from her point of view but she’s hard to listen to. I couldn’t get passed her making ALL of it about her 😬 and it was as if she would be disappointed if she found out she wasn’t on the list.

I’m totally confused. Why is this podcast called Confronting Columbine but it’s about OJ Simpson? What am I missing?

    I support you
I just recently found your podcast and never knew a lot of the story. Listening to the facts of dna and other things that were found I know for a fact OJ is guilty. I also believe the reason he is back on social media is because you did hit a nerve and he wants to put the spotlight back on you and make you look bad. Anyone with common sense can see he did it and hasn’t changed at all. I am praying for you and your family and you are all in my heart.

    Touching
It was interesting to hear about how everyone is doing in life all these years later. There is so much we can learn about trauma and how it manifests even so many years later. It’s good to take a look at it so we can learn from it. This is a very complex issue that we have to talk about and not forget. This was a very honest and vulnerable podcast that had touched my heartstrings
  • Matt Newell
    Over produced
Tone and placement of the commercials is very off-putting, considering the subject matter. Could do without the sound effects and background music. The interviews can and should speak for themselves. In the end, I couldn’t get past the first episode, which was surprising, since the first season was so good.

    Moving and informative
Confronting Columbine really hit me hard. It was an honor to hear so many tell their stories and hear from all those who experienced this horrific tragedy. There were so many moments I was brought to tears or choked up hearing the survivors speak. Thank you for sharing such a vulnerable and emotional story.

    Confronting Series
These two series-Columbine and OJ- have been by far the two best podcast I have heard. I binge listened staying up all night listening to them both. I have played them both a second time making my husband listen to them.

    Amazing! Touching! A Must!
Amy-thank you for your candidness and vulnerability! What you, your teachers and your peers experienced is unimaginable. You’ve done an amazing job of sharing your story. I send all of my positive and healing energy your way. Much love.

    Unlistenable…Woah is me!
Amy is a narcissist, it can happen with trauma when you don’t get enough support. I wasn’t able to listen because of that, I’m sorry for what she went through but it’s not all about her. Also, Dave Cullen doesn’t know his butt from his elbow, take what he says with a grain of salt!! I don’t like that they chose to ignore what a problematic and toxic school it used to be. The first season was good, what happened?
