EllenReview0000Great interpretation of a strange and wonderful storyI loved this series as a kid, and returned to it as a parent. The stories are surprising and strange in all the best ways, and this podcast is a true delight.

SepdetTrue to the spirit of the book!If you want a good adaptation, go to audiodrama, which sticks close to the words, leans into the music implied by the book, and simplifies only to clarify. Changes are well-judged, few, and added with a light touch, (I liked the coda), Will is excellent, and I do believe that's Dame Harriet Vane, excuse me, Walters, adding gravitas as The Lady. Two very minor quibbles. It feels a trifle rushed now and then, failing to pause for emotional beats to sink in, or dashing through a dramatic sequence on speedrun. But then, that's the nature of abridgement. Also, personally, I expected Merriman to have a deeper, more gravelly voice, a la Peter Capaldi or Christopher Lee. but that's more matter of personal preference. Other one anyway, I enjoyed it and stayed up half the night because I couldn't stop listening until I'd bibged the whole thing. I am definitely on board if they choose to do any of the other books.

AngelRN3A favorite! This was one of my favorite childhood books. Loved listening to this dramatization. 💜

CamaroGirlMuch too rushedThis could have been twice as long. As cut as it is, there is a very little character depth and continuity, meaning key scenes feel rushed and shallow. The production value is great, but way too short of an adaptation.

rafflmaoExcellent Production, Boring StoryNever read it and I shouldn’t have had to in order to enjoy it. Lots of stories are read for podcasts and turn out great. This one is not good. Lacking depth and detail and way too rushed. I care so so little about this kid and I can’t keep track of each character. Maybe if I had read it, I’d feel differently. But again, I dont think that should matter. I am a voracious reader and podcast consumer with a very strong leaning toward sci fi/supernatural fiction and I just can’t get into this.

DugliusGreat audio, simplistic storyThe audio experience, acting, and production were top notch. But the story was unoriginal and felt way too abbreviated. I have not read the original to compare, but I’m not recommending this to others. Would love to see the approach used with better material.

gregabeeImmersive, entertaining, and just the right amount eerieI’ve loved this book for a long time and have read it many times. This is an incredible adaptation, and you really feel like you are there with Will. It’s very immersive, and I actually jumped thinking there was someone behind me talking at one point. The production truly captures the eerie atmosphere and the spirit of the book. The whole series is great (I think I hold the unpopular opinion that the first one, Over Sea, Under Stone, is my favorite), and I hope they will consider adapting the other books in the series, too!

dmcgilvrayA Beautifully Crafted Audio EpicThis radio play adaptation of ‘The Dark Is Rising’ is amazing. The story is lovingly adapted and the wondrous soundscape makes you feel immersed in the action. A brilliant audio epic.

Burned By AdobeGreat performances, thin storyThe production of this classic book of fantasy is well done. However, I had forgotten how very poorly written this book was. As someone who was a child in the 1970s, I remembered it as something more Zen what it is. The Dark is so easily defeated, and the 11 year-old so quickly triumphant the n every conflict, it feels more like a quickly executed watercolor painting of a mood than a genuine story.

Vulpe72Honoring the spirit of a remarkable storySusan Cooper’s stunning stories have defied the narrow capabilities of modern entertainment media until now. Artfully produced, this remarkable series respects the powerful original storyline, weaving the mundane and the otherworldly into a listening experience that transports the mind and inspires the imagination. Well done!
