Parenting #205

Parenting a teenager is the most uniquely challenging thing you’ve ever done. The host of Speaking of Teens, Ann Coleman, understands all too well. After drowning in those challenges, herself, she spent several years transitioning from practicing attorney to expert in the science of adolescence and parenting. Every Tuesday she delivers the most up to date, science-based information, news and advice to help you better understand, relate to, and parent your teen…without the conflict. From navigating relationships and social media to academic pressures and mental health issues, she, along with an occasional expert guest, will help you peacefully parent your teenager with confidence.

    I LOVE this podcast!
I have found so much useful information through this podcast that has helped my relationship with my teens! I only wish I’d found it earlier, which is why I share it with the parents of my elementary students. Keep up the great work!

    Ann is sooo informative
I have been listening to Speaking of Teens since my own adopted son began struggles with his mental health and began avoiding school. I have been able to relate to so much of what Ann went through parenting her son and have learned so much from her experiences and the wealth of knowledge she provides in each podcast. The show notes, links, and the podcast itself are so well thought out, organized and easy to follow. So much of what Ann talks about helps me put our own personal experience into perspective and helps me to take a step back and evaluate certain aspects of our parenting style that could use a make over. Thank you for taking your experience and turning it into something positive for other parents to draw from. I look forward to it each week and plan on going back and starting from the beginning so I don’t miss any of the valuable advice and resources from before I started listening.

Authentic, real, & offers practical solutions based on research
Love Ann's authenticity and her approach to parent education. Having been down the path that many of her listeners are on or heading towards with their teens and tweens, Ann offers practical advice based upon research. She has been in the trenches of parenting a troubled teen herself as well, but has come out on the other side with information that she wishes she had known when she was literally drowning in chaos. Her story inspired her to help other parents avoid some of the pitfalls and empowers me to be a better mom! Too many parent educators, coaches, therapists and doctors out there offer advice riddled with judgement, but NOT Ann! Do you have a “normal” tween/teen without chaos? This podcast is for you two. Ann’s positive discipline approach does work. Is it easy? Nope! It does take a ton of work! Is it fair that we have to learn a new way of parenting than the way our parents parented us? No, it’s not fair and that is probably the most difficult hurdle to overcome BUT IT IS SO WORTH IT! Does her approach play off in the long run? You bet it does! Do I have any regrets? Yes, I wish I had discovered her podcast sooner so that I could have turned the ship around faster. Take a listen and promise yourself to devote just a few month of applying her suggestions and you’ll be thankful you did!

    Fantastic Parenting Content
This podcast is a life-saver for my relationship with my teen daughter. Raising teens seems to require a degree in adolescent mental health, which most of us do not have. Thankful to have found these episodes when I did… wish I had been listening sooner.

    Don’t waste your time
Basically, if you adhere to the style of parenting that believes you clear the path for your child this is the podcast for you. If you would like to prepare your child for the path then look elsewhere.

A Must listen to podcast if you have teens
This podcast is so helpful. As a busy mom of four. I have three daughters and one son. 3 teens and it’s not always easy connecting with them or getting them to listen, or trying to see their point of view. This podcast offers insightful information on how to stay connected to your teen but also talks about tough stuff like cutting. Its hard to talk about the tough things we go through as parents and sometimes we forget to ask for help. The FB page is also a great place to connect with other parents experiencing the same issues. I have found it to be very supportive. I would recommend Ann Coleman’s podcast to any parent.

    Amazing resource for parents
I’m a school based therapist that works with teens and their families. It’s difficult to coach parents while focusing on supporting the teens, so this podcast has become my go to recommendation for parents to check out. Thank you for covering so many applicable topics with brain based research and practical tips! This is gold!!

    Encouraging, heart-warming but evidence based
I am a parent educator (for the newborn period) so I am used to breaking the hard news to parents that these little creatures are full of instinctual imperatives that you cannot control (you can only control your emotional reaction to their behaviors) Turns out parenting a teen is pretty similar! Ann is helping me through this learning process using both science AND empathy.

    This podcast is fantastic!
No one does better research or delivers helpful content in a more engaging way than Ann! As a mom of teens I am so grateful I found this podcast! Each week Ann delivers content that helps me to be a better parent and reminds me I’m not in this alone!

    Soaking it up!!
This podcast has opened my eyes to so many things. Not only about my teens but also myself. The episodes are just the right amount of time and the screen notes she provides are so helpful. You can reference each transcript if you are going wanting to go back to look for something specific. Oh, and she has a good voice. I have turned a podcast off in the past just because I don’t like the voice. It’s an important factor!!

This podcast saved my relationship with my teen
My teen was calling for help and I didn’t see it. I was doing all the wrong things. Ann’s wisdom was paramount in clarifying on everything! I love how she shares her own story and is vulnerable herself. So many parents pretend like they have it all together. Guess what? We are all fumbling in the dark. Thank God, we have “Speaking of Teens” to turn on the light—giving us the true help we need.

    Great podcast
My husband and I have found this show to be extremely helpful in understanding why our teenager behaves the way he does and how we can adapt our parenting to ensure we maintain a connected relationship with him. I appreciate the format and that the episodes are packed with useful information. In addition, Ann has put together printable one-sheets that can be referred to on the fly. I have one taped to my closet door for reminders.
