Skip Season 5 - predictable sappy romance
Seasons 1-4 are entertaining and easy to listen to, albeit simple with linear plot lines and straightforward character development. Season 5 is quite frankly a mediocre, sappy love story with multiple “damsel in distress” anti-feminists plot lines that rely on outdated tropes of heterosexual romance, embarrassing and poorly executed erotica, topped off by undeveloped characters who have awkward fake American accents (although the narrators have lovely natural British accents when voicing an American character’s internal monologue… very jarring). It is predictable, boring and seems made for pre-pubescent teenagers. I am shocked this made its way through production and was released to the public. This does not nearly meet the standard I expect from Realm, a leading fiction podcast channel.

show is good but the “behind the scenes” discussion is not
the show is enjoyable, I do like that it’s diverse and it doesn’t feel forced like some commenters are saying. that being said, WOW the behind the scenes segments are annoying. they take up a huge chunk of the episode and are so immersion breaking. normally i listen to podcasts while working and my hands aren’t necessarily free to skip manually. i Don’t Care for the commentary at ALL. I just want the next episode to play after a few ads, which I don’t mind listening to to support.

    Bland
Very bland. I saw some negative reviews that were upset that this plot focused on race. This isn’t that kind of review. The racial aspect of the plot held so much promise for the story but I don’t know, it just felt flat. It’s kind of sad that the most entertaining part was the “ally” white girl. Definitely an interesting premise with some weak execution.

I am really enjoying Realm’s stories! Entertaining and fun to listen to!

This show would be a lot more interesting if we left out the commentary in the beginning and the end. The actual show is like 10 min and then they spend the rest of the show being annoying
  • lya304
    Cool but…
Im enjoying the actual story but I hate that they waste 8 min at the end chitchatting. I get they want the creator to be more known but make another show for that or add an extra episode at the end to just speak to her instead of cutting the story short to listen to idle chit chat.

    A must listen
I love this podcast! It’s a great listen filled with humor, emotion, and a fantastic cast of voices!

    Meh
Ridiculous story about an unbelievably selfish girl who throws a tantrum every time she doesn’t get her way.

    I think I’m spell bounded…
I’m about 5 episodes in. I must admit that im a little confused as to who is who so far and the main character Jenna kinda annoys me a bit. I feel like she’s one of those people that crate their own problems but blame everyone else. I do love Gabourey’s voice acting though! Anyone else would have made the character completely unbearable but she does such a great job that I can’t stop listening. I am SO beyond entertained!

    Loved It!
    Love Gabourey Sidibe 🙌🏾
  • It's me. Not you
    Love a dual storyline
Super fun to listen to. All the characters created a pleasantly-toxic love/hate relationship within me…who doesn’t love that?! Sad to be nearing the 13th episode and would soooo love more!

    It’s so bad but…
I don’t know how this won an award for best scripted podcast. Or how the reviews say it’s “thoughtful”—????. It’s so bad 🤣 but you keep listening because it’s like that bad movie that you can’t help but to watch. The white girl narrator, Elise, has that irritating white girl voice 😂 and she’s so thirsty for Victor that it’s quite sad. The writing is basic and the voice acting is ok. They all sound like they’re reading the script rather than acting the script. But with that said it’s an easy listen and if you have nothing else in your library to listen to or need a break from True Crimes, then this will do.

Started out so intriguing but doesn’t develop
I’d give this between two and three stars actually. All the ingredients for a great story were there. But I agree with the other review that stated, “None of these characters sound real. They’re all caricatures of what someone thinks other people sound like,” and that’s kind of true. I wish the story had stuck to the narrator that is more fully fleshed out, because there is another narrator whose character trait is “awkwardly biased but doesn’t realize it,” and who doesn’t really have anything else going on. That makes every scene hit the same note. You always know what that character’s interactions are going to be in advance and it’s always something very obvious (and the same as before). So as an audience you don’t end up that intrigued by/drawn to that narrator and it also eliminates a lot of the element of surprise listening to them. The more sympathetic narrator is better but it felt like a lot was going on, but at the same time there were some issues with pacing/build up. The end also kind of feels like it petered out. This was my first time listening to a story podcast and there were things I wanted to like, but it just didn’t hook me in other ways. It was a fantastic setting and premise though.

    One Dimensional
The premise -mixing witches and true crime and themes of racism and classism- had so much potential. But the characters have no personality apart from their racial stereotypes and the plot is thin at best. Influencers are vapid, white women are basic, and other un-nuanced troupes. A real missed opportunity - this story could have used metaphor instead of preaching and it would have been way more effective. Ultimately, it feels like it’s trying to guilt you into believing it’s good. The problem is entirely with the writing; the performances were pretty good.

This was sooooooo good. I truly enjoyed this podcast. I didn’t want it to end.
  • EOD1986
    Ugh
This is so far removed from being even remotely entertaining. The leftest racial biased narrative is palpable.

    Best find
I don’t mentally ever review but I needed to do this. Please make more, this was excellent and I love that the energy you put into this shows. Great great job. Please more about then witches and Gabby did excellent.

    Wow!
Just stumbled across the podcast. Gabourey is the greatest. Highly recommend!

    White guilt
Could have been a fun story but the constant white guilt commentary was palpable. It’s not productive insight or commentary just white characters being like “eeks so sorry I’m white!” Painful.
  • Kristend17
    Black, white, black, white…
Don’t play the drinking game with the words black and white because you will die of alcohol poisoning. 3 episodes in and I am really trying to like it, I just don’t understand why there is much emphasis on race, its really distracting from the “plot?” Or should I say, so far, it IS the plot.
  • loveandsqualor22
    Loved this one
Really different approach with this one, it stayed with me long after. I loved the story, the charismatic narrator and also that she isn't trying to present you something "objective"- she isn't talking to an audience but more like, a confidante. Paced well too.
  • Olivesak
    Racist
I thought it might get better but the racism and stereotyping is way too hard to ignore.

    Amazing
I absolutely loved this story. The characters are interesting, the plot keeps you on your toes, and the acting is great! Glad I had my headphones on for a little of this, but I’ve gotta be honest that made it even more fun! I wish I could give 500 stars.

    What a Great story!
What a great podcast, I’m absolutely hooked! Such a great story, it’s different and I’m glad for that. It is very well scripted imo. Easy to follow with no cringe. Thankfully.

    Before listening
I haven’t listened yet. Which is why I still have it 5 stars bc I could be reading the synopsis out of context. As a witch, I found teen Vogues comment about witchcraft being everything wrong in society quite offensive. From my perspective, christians are everything wrong in society. This narrative that witches are bad is being proved wrong more everyday. Finding out that witchcraft is just energy work and law of attraction is something that I hope is at least spoken About outside of the story. We (witches) have been vilified enough over the centuries. Now if this is just a story and I’m speaking out of context, after I listen I will change my review or write another one but I really hope that outside of the story you urge listeners to actually research what witchcraft really is and that we are not evil nor are we everything wrong in society… we are very peaceful and loving. We actually live out the love for everyone, help as many humans as possible and do no harm that christians CLAIM to be.

    Dud of an ending
I literally thought the finale episode was the white girl's white fantasy dream sequence until halfway through.

    Favorite fictional podcast!!
If there’s any possible way that this can get a season 2 or a spin-off, the world would be better for us. Such a great story with funny and interesting characters. I’m heartbroken that it’s over

    What an enthralling listen!
I’m only halfway through, but I’m totally hooked! Incredibly smart, poignant, funny, and addicting. Jam packed with themes that keep me thinking and coming back for more. Thank you for creating this piece of art!

    A fun listen
This is a great reprieve from all the true crime - sometimes you need something less negative. I really enjoy listening to this pod and have had a few out loud chuckles. I really hope that Realm can continue to make these lighthearted but engaging podcasts.
  • shelejjjj
    Everyone is insufferable.
All the characters are really insufferable and one dimensional. No one does any meaningful self reflection and its really surprising they all seem to be at least above the age of 29. Jenna is the most insufferable. Like her opinions are valid, but her behaviors and outburst are so self righteous and really tactless. BUT I will say its better to be frustrated by these characters than constantly listening to the morning news, which is why I sought out story based podcasts in the first place.

    Timely, spicy, and bingeable
This pod is phenomenal. Pia Wilson’s writing is impeccable and the cast delivers every line excellently. The themes are timely, the banter is witty, the characters are dynamic and relatable. If this doesn’t get at least an HBO limited series, I’ll seriously rampage.
