The New Mason Jar with Cindy Rollins explores the application of Charlotte Mason’s philosophy to the atmosphere, discipline, and life of our homes and schools. We cover Charlotte’s timeless principles as they work themselves out in our real and modern lives. Interviewing seasoned moms who have cherished Charlotte’s works while raising real children in real families, we endeavor to lay a foundation of hope and possibility for our listeners. Quality Podcast!
Really enjoyed the 2/27/25 podcast with Stephanie Russell. I had no idea the Mary L. Petrie was such a trailblazer in theological studies in the 1800s when women weren’t even allowed to earn a bachelor’s degree in England at the time. Very informative and interesting. Great questions and engaging interview.

    Yikes!!
Every other word is “um”, otherwise it’s whiny. How can anyone make it through this podcast??

    Overall a great podcast
Overall I have gained a lot from listening to this podcast. I am in no way a Charlotte Mason expert but I noticed something. The most recent podcast on misrepresentation of Charlotte Mason I have some issues with. While I do agree that Memoria Press doesn’t quite understand the Charlotte Mason method, I don’t think they meant to upset Charlotte Mason homeschoolers. I’d say they were misguided. I did listen to all 3 episodes they had from beginning to end. I noticed that no one from the New Mason Jar podcast listened to Memoria press episodes in full and to me that’s not exactly fair. Instead of giving it a listen, it appears everyone went into full defense mode. When that happens it will get no where because people are stuck in their ways. In one of Memoria presses episodes on this they did say that perhaps Charlotte Mason is classical and that it can strengthen the classical method. They at least did that. The getting all upset and getting defensive in my honest opinion is not the right way to go about it. Again I appreciate this podcast but would encourage everyone to at least try to see other people’s points of view. It is at the end of the day what makes us human.

    Yuck
These two women are awful at interviews because they cannot ask even simple questions without talking way too much about a bunch of non-interesting irrelevant stuff. Ladies, why don’t you write out your questions and then shut up after you asked them? Think about your audience.

    Encouraging podcast
This podcast with Jason Baxter was refreshing and wonderful to hear. I’m looking forward to reading the book when it comes in the mail and I’m thankful we will be going through it in the future! Thank you for all the work you ladies continue to do.

They talk a lot but don’t say much
This trashing of so-called “neoclassical education” is done in complete generalizations and without any specific examples. Never do they themselves define what they mean or what anyone means by classical. The closest they get is by saying classical education is simply “ages and stages.” Nobody in classical education would reduce it to that. Clearly these ladies are highly intelligent, but a basic necessity to making any argument is to define your terms. They never dk. The conversation would have been actually helpful if they had offered a specific comparison and contrast between classical, Charlotte Mason, and neoclassical. They make a bunch of general statements, and they end up not saying much at all. And they seem a bit about snobby about Charlotte Mason, as if a single person has the perfect philosophy of education. It is human nature to buy into something and then defend it to the point of arrogantly dismissing any other way of thinking. At the classical school where I taught, we did not treat the Charlotte Mason camp in such a way, but actually were required to read and discuss “Consider This” and glean from whatever we could in an effort to become better thinkers and teachers. There is so much wisdom and so many intelligent thinkers in the classical education world today, it is a shame that these women are adopting a caricature of it and then pitting it against Charlotte Mason. Also, it was implied at some point that having children memorize is the same as telling them what to think. That is ridiculous. Also, a world where Latin phrases were commonplace would be a much better world!

    Inspiration and instruction
Mere Motherhood brought my weary homeschool spirit back to life when I picked it up after my first two years of homeschooling. It really helped me to renew my efforts and continue homeschooling by seeing the beauty in a homeschooling life. I was so glad when I found this podcast that continues to inspire and instruct us homeschool mamas. Thank you!

    Maybe an interview from SCM?
I’m loving the series on CM curriculum! I use AO, but I would also love to see you include Simply Charlotte Mason in the line up as well. Sonya Shafer’s podcast and blog has been such a help to SO many!

    Wonderful, Beautiful podcast!!!
I’m so thankful that Cindy Rollins is doing this podcast!!!! I am beginning my third year of homeschooling, and over the course of the past year I have started to learn more and more about Charlotte Mason. I first heard Cindy Rollins as a guest on another podcast, and I gleaned sooo much from her wisdom. This past month I read Morning Time: A Liturgy of Love, Mere Motherhood, and am now reading the book that first inspired her toward a Charlotte Mason education, For the Children’s Sake. Now to this podcast… I felt like I found treasure when I discovered that she had a new podcast! It is sooo helpful, as I have been seeking to learn all I can about the Charlotte Mason approach, to listen to Cindy and her guests talk about the various aspects of a Charlotte Mason education. It has helped clarify things for me, as she asks the practical nitty gritty questions about things like narration. It has made everything I’ve been learning through these books come more and more to life through the lives and experiences of Cindy and her guests as they place the philosophy in the contexts of their lives. I get excited when I hear the music of the podcast. It is lovely and reminds me of pride and prejudice. And starting with a Charlotte Mason quote is just the perfect way to begin. Thank you, Cindy, for doing this, and extending your mentor ship to moms like me!!!

    Can’t get enough!
This podcast has been such a blessing. I’m the mother of a 4 year old and feel I’ve been called to homeschool. The CM method has me so excited . The guests on this podcast are so authentic . This has been a great resource to learn more . Inspiring ! And the intro music is so beautiful!

    So helpful
I’ve been eager to hear more about Charlotte Mason homeschooling, so when I heard that Cindy Rollins was starting a podcast on that topic, I subscribed to this podcast from day 1! Being a long time listener of the Literary Life podcast and hearing Cindy’s wisdom there as well as hearing her interviewed over the years by Pam Barnhill over at the Your Morning Basket podcast, I was so pleased to finally have a place where I can hear her share exclusively about educational philosophy and homeschooling (since I’m too young in my homeschooling journey to have been able to follow Cindy when she had a blog!). I also very much enjoy hearing insights, explanations and examples from Dawn as well! Thank you ladies for your work on this podcast. And as a side note, I think the intro and outro music is delightful.

    My favorite podcast
I truly am always so happy and excited whenever I see there is a new episode to listen to. I always learn something of value and feel ENCOURAGED in my humble attempts to provide this CM feast for my family and just homeschool in general. Thank you ladies so very much! Please continue.

    Trustworthy
In this Age of Information, we have to make choices about whose voices have access to us. We only have so much time. I never regret choosing Cindy over the variety of other homeschooling, CM, or classical education platforms I could choose from. I feel like Cindy honors mothers and their time in a way that other speakers and influencers have yet to consider. It’s always worth it. Thank you, Cindy. And Dawn, your style and contributions here are just right. Thank you both for this work.

Wisdom from those who have gone before.
As a young mama new to Charlotte Mason homeschooling, I appreciate Cindy Rollins’ honest perspective. Following pretty CM accounts on Instagram is a temptation, but I think The New Mason Jar, with it’s words of wisdom from seasoned Charlotte Mason educators, will deliver a more truthful picture of what this journey will require of me. Thank you, thank you!

    Breath of fresh air
I discovered CM when my oldest daughter was a baby and have been “preparing” to begin formal lessons for the past five years with podcasts, Facebook discussion groups, and the volumes themselves. As my daughter approaches her sixth birthday, I feel like I don’t know anything at all as I look at the actual child before me instead of who I expected her to be when we reached this point. This podcast has been freeing for me. Instead of the “how do I do this?” I’ve been working on for five years, it is bringing me back to the “why am I doing this?” The perspectives presented here, many being in the rearview mirror of their own homeschooling days, along with the honesty, are doing a world of good for me.

    Thank you for coming back
Cindy Rollins jumped started my journey with CM and I was sad to see her go. Now I’m immensely grateful and excited to have my favorite mentor back!!

So thankful for The New Mason Jar!
After considering Cindy and Karen among my primary mentors in our Charlotte Mason homeschooling journey of the past four years, what a delight to finally tune in here and listen to the first four episodes since yesterday. I feel so at home here with my very favorite voices in the Charlotte Mason community. Their collective wisdom, experience, and life-giving perspective is re-orienting and a balm to my soul. Thank you for gifting us with this space, Cindy. It is much needed and gladly received. Also, purple hydrangeas in Mason jars are my favorite. When the music plays, I feel God’s smiling encouragement.

    Love, love love!
The music, Cyndi’s warm, “down to earth”personality grounded in wisdom, the intro, the guests, the quote at the end of each show…what’s not to love?!?!? So glad Cyndi is back!

A modern feast of Charlotte Masons philosophies spread by Cindy
I have listened to Cindy’s podcast from the very beginning, and I am so thankful that she started her Mason Jar again. Cindy is full of knowledge, wisdom, and experience in the CM method, yet she is humble, approachable and so thoughtful. Her suggestions are always inspiring but never condemning/discouraging. She brings (or reminds) ideas or insights that helps me tweak my home routines so I can continue to bring spread more on the table of this educational feast. If you want to be inspired to live a life full of goodness, truth, and beauty with or without the children, listen to Cindy.

This is such a great place to start when building a Charlotte Mason education in your home. I’ve read Cindy’s books and have followed her for some time. Thank you Cindy!!
As a second year homeschooler I am so thankful for Cindy Rollins and her wisdom. She is the voice we moms need to hear, seasoned, practical encouragement from a woman who is a little farther on the journey and can provide the hindsight that I need to keep going day after day. Thank you a million times over for coming back to the podcast platform. Pure gold!

I am so happy to have found this delightful podcast
  • cbragen
    Excellent!
The end quote of each episode says it all: “Children are born persons, and so are their moms.” So encouraged by this podcast and what each person brings to the table when talking about Charlotte Mason’s principals and methods. The way this podcast is presented is uplifting and practical - not in any way burdensome for a new or seasoned homeschool parent. Thank you to Cindy and all who make this podcast possible! I look forward to tuning in for future episodes!

    Best Charlotte Mason Podcast
What an absolute treat from the sprightly music to the experienced wisdom and graciousness of the hosts and guests. Being a Charlotte Mason mom “of a certain age” I still find this podcast refreshing and insightful. Thank you Cindy and Dawn!
  • JayKayAitch
    Pragmatic and Encouraging
Some many Charlotte Mason podcasts are full of “experts” who may not even have a child in formal lessons yet. There is a lot of idealism and a lot of talk about the right way to do things, which while I’m sure is well-intended, leads to guilt and division. Enter Cindy and her guests who have been homeschooling for decades. Look no further for pragmatic advice and encouragement. Thank you, Cindy! Dawn, thanks for hounding her to start the podcast back up!
  • Happy Listener 6864
    Thank you!
I just finished listening to all the episodes available, and all I can think is: please, share more! Cindy does a beautiful job delving into Charlotte Mason’s philosophy and her guests are equally delightful resources. As a new Charlotte Mason educator, I can already tell that this will be an indispensable resource for me for years to come.

    Happy to have this show.
So happy that Cindy is back to doing a CM show again. As a retired CM homeschool mom, I just love to listen to great conversations about the Charlotte Mason way. It is a way of living.

    She’s back!
Thank you Cindy, for sharing your world and your experience with us moms in the trenches. My oldest child is 6 and we’re about to begin Ambleside Online because of your influence. I read For the Children’s Sake, then Mere Motherhood and I was sold on a Charlotte Mason education for my kids (and myself). I’m so glad I get to hear your thoughts in podcast form again as we begin this journey!
