Truer Crime

Do you ever listen to a true crime podcast and think, “that’s not quite right…?” Same. Crime stories are hard to ignore and even harder to forget. But the thing is... they’re stories. And getting a story right is all about how you tell it. Truer Crime talks about real people— murdered, missing, misled — with more nuance, more context, and more questions. Hosted by Celisia Stanton. Season 2 out now!

    Great Podcast
I’m learning so much! Where was this history when I was growing up? It’s pisses me off that the history we learned is all about White men. Thank you so much, Celisia, for this education. It’s invaluable. (I’m so sorry about what the financial guy did to you.💕)

    I need a title?!?
I have made it a point to seek out podcasts that center victims as I have always found the true crime genre to be a bit problematic. I’m not surprised that the algorithm led me here. I have enjoyed the story telling and the thoughtful care given to each case, thank you and I am looking forward to season 3!

    Begging for reviews is tacky
As a new listener being begged to leave a good review for several minutes is so off-putting especially the detail put in “how to leave a good review” … if the podcast is good people don’t need a tutorial on “what to write”

    Refreshing
Great podcast, I appreciate that Celisia offers action items to encourage change

“All the racism in the Susan Smith case” because she said the man was black??
Narrator is so biased and “woke” it’s beyond sickening. Turned off before I finished one episode . I was super interested in this story in particular. Horrible podcast.

    Excellent Podcast
Well written and produced. My new fave podcast!

    Important True Crime
The true crime community is such an interesting space, filled with podcasts both sensitive to families and sometimes not- but it has always been lacking the important telling of the truth about our justice system, the micro and macro aggressions facing oppressed communities goes untold and without reparation. Celisia does a fantastic job telling these stories and shedding light into the dark corners of our justice system and the flaws within it, opening up the necessary conversations that should be had to make change in our system so we can correct these problems and create a more perfect union for all of us.

    Surprised
I’m surprised by how bad this podcast is! I love true crime and normally would be a fan and binge every episode. I couldn’t get through the episode on Darlie Poitier. The episode’s clear, unsubstantiated bias is offensive to the victims. Several other episodes I tried and couldn’t listen to either.

    Good-ish
Good show but please cut back on the use of “sort of” peppered throughout—I stopped listening because it was so distracting.

    Amazing Podcast
Celsius brings a new storyline to true crime with a deeper dive and eye opening new facts. The most mind blowing episode so far has been the MLK Jr episode. Subscribe now.

Brilliant Socially Insightful True Crime Storytelling
I’ve listened to much of Season 2 and returned to binge Season 1. I wish I had started from the beginning so I could fully appreciate the writing and presentation style even more! Perhaps it is only my experience - but the way Celosia weaves True Crime with the shortcomings of our society is nothing short of brilliant reminicant of other podcasts like Throughline. When you refer to serial kilers I deeply appreciate that you call out colonizers as mass murderers. Setting those ideas aside when listening to crime podcasts is so easy. Thank you for your impeccable storytelling and for giving us hope that we can impact future generations of victims and victimizers if we change society. Your work is inspiring and gives us hope for a better future.

    Great Storytelling
Celisia does deep and thorough research into all the cases she presents. Not your run of the mill true crime podcast.

    Beautiful storytelling, admirable reporting!
I’ve been a silent listener — this is my first review! After listening to the Alice Sebold / Anthony Broadwater episode, I felt compelled to share my thoughts. Well done, wow! What a powerful episode — it’s so refreshing to hear podcasts with hosts/writers like Celisia who not only showcase all of the evidence, but also call out their own biases and let the listener sit with it all. I didn’t know this story (which shocked me, as a woman of color who is very involved in the social justice movement and an avid reader of Alice Sebold’s work) and am so glad it’s being told. Thank you, thank you, for all of your work! Please don’t stop making this show!

    Celisia a gem
These deeply humanizing stories shine light on victims of crime, while also reckoning with the context of structural violence. I’m grateful for Celisia’s thoughtfulness behind each episode
  • Stay Fat
    Disappointing
I found the podcast amateurish and desparately in need of a good editor. The host has her own biases and propensity for oversights that wholly undermine the purported nature of its schtick. Recommend you pass on this if you’re a true crime junkie with any education or intelligence. And if you get squeamish listening to vocal-fry voicing, the host will have you on the ceiling.
  • Ashley Blair622
    Personal bias, lots of opinion
Compared to other True Crime I love to watch and listen to, this is saturated with personal bias and lots of opinion rather than just interpreting facts. I gave a few episodes a try but found more of the same. I would recommend other podcasts like Crime Junkie that stick more to just telling the facts and less commentary and opinion.
  • ChelleDan
    Standout
In a world with a ridiculous number of true crime podcasts, this one is a standout. The stories are meticulously researched & told with compassion.

    Beautiful Mastery of Critical Thought
This work is beautiful. The care and thought that goes into the stories that we tell each-other and ourselves is an art and voice for the moment. Thank you for your critical thinking and depth and care for the connection to humanity.

    Human and Humane
This is true crime that doesn’t just rest on the laurels of sensationalism. The host, Celisia Stanton, has a very pleasant voice and an objective view of the cases, while remaining very human (ie, we’re not just getting cold, hard facts). I’m glad I found this podcast to add to my true crime rotation.
  • SarahMarieWest

The stories true crime needs to tell
Thank you for bringing such a fresh and needed perspective to true crime. Driving into the stories in a way to honors the victims and questions the often told narratives. I appreciate how every episode has takeaways and action items. This is the way to responsibly talk about true crime!!
  • ElProfeML

Not your average true crime podcast.
Stumbled across this show by chance and I'm so glad! I love the different angle the narrator brings to her cases. I listen to a lot of true crime podcasts but this one feels totally different and is a refreshing change to my typical rotation. Cannot recommend enough!

    Great, fresh perspective
I found this show a month ago and have already binged every episode of season one and two. Celisia brings a fresh perspective to stories a lot of us have heard and brings awareness to ones we should have heard about.
