The Queer Quadrant

37

Four-quadrant films are movies designed to appeal to the biggest, widest audience possible. In the process, they can often leave out a lot of LGBTQ+ representation – but end up loaded with subtext. In The Queer Quadrant, hosts Brooke Solomon and Jordan Gustafson examine cinema in all its cultural contexts, and explore why your favorite four-quadrant blockbuster is maybe…not as straight as you think it is.

Great place to find films to watch
I love it when they talk about a movie I’ve seen but also half the time it’s one I haven’t, I end up going and watching it. I now own Birds of Prey and have watched it multiple times and started making breakfast sandwiches!

Good but could use more structure
Just listened to the Challengers episode and I enjoyed it but was waiting for some structure or organization to kick in. There were a few times when they brought up a specific scene and someone said “we’ll get to that later” and they never do! It’s more stream-of-consciousness/tangent style, which is still entertaining, but I was hoping for a more scene-specific analytical discussion. I would recommend categories like favorite scenes, nitpicks, etc, for future episodes.

    Great concept, aimless discussions
I’ve listened to two episodes (Rope, Happiest Season) and I will not be returning for more. It’s a great idea for a podcast, but the discussions are so formless that the two episodes I listened to were just 3 people talking for over an hour without any plot description, games, discussion points, pauses for breaks, etc. This podcast needs an agenda so that each episode follows a similar outline. The hosts seem fine (they’re a little too film school-y rather than film scholar-y) and they seemed to have gotten guests that are better and more-informed than them (which is smart). Also, some of the movies they’ve chosen are not, and were not intended to be, blockbusters so they’re not even adhering to their own premise. Which makes sense, because—again—aimless. Disappointed.

Excellent podcast. The repartee between Jordan and Brooke was fantastic. I enjoyed listening to the entire podcast, found their knowledge of the film and detailed discussion about the Queer Quadrant and elements of the movie extremely interesting. It has led me to view movies through a new lens and reflect on other movies. This podcast is for both those who know about film and for those who don’t. I cannot day enough- except that I thoroughly enjoyed the podcast, learned a lot, and can not wait to listen to more. Fantastic!

I CANNOT say enough great things about this podcast. It’s so refreshing to hear movie reviews focused on queer themes by people who are ACTUALLY queer and have a genuine interest and passion for what they’re talking about!! They really know their stuff!! 10/10 would recommend

4 Quadrants elevates the conversation of film
I truly enjoyed this podcast. The chemistry between the hosts is great as they play off of one another dissecting their film du jour. Brooke and Jordan offer the listener refreshingly new insights of LGBTQ’s in film that might elude the average viewer. A real treat to listen to about something that has often escaped discussion because it was taboo. Check it out, definitely worth the listen.

This podcast put me in such a good mood!! It’s so fun and has already given me a new way to look at movies. I could listen to Jordan and Brooke talk about movies all day long.
