Houselights: A Film Director Podcast

9

If you’re looking for the best movie podcast for everyone who appreciates movies, subscribe to “Houselights” today!

Each week, hosts Darren Moser, John Mills, and Tristan Riddell share what they see as a movie director’s signature approach and how it shaped the movies you love. Join them as they unpack the works of some of the most prominent directors - and the lost works of the most masterful auteurs.

Weekly episodes comprise series featuring works of different directors approached in unexpected ways. For example:

  • The entire filmography of a celebrated director like David Fincher or Christopher Nolan;

  • The films of a director during a particular decade, like Francis Ford Coppola in the 1990s;

  • A single film from each decade of the impactful director Spike Lee to see how his style evolved;

  • The approach of different directors to a single franchise character or series, such as Hannibal Lecter or James Bond, and

  • They’re always open to suggestions from listeners at https://thenerdparty.com/contact

In each case, your hosts bring unique takes to the discussion, fostering an informative conversation that’s equally insightful and entertaining...from an objectively critical but objectively fair angle.

So, if you’re interested in the stories behind the story, the decisions that shape our favorite films, and the people who make them happen, “Houselights” is the best movie podcast for you.

We are proud to be part of The Nerd Party Network, which is dedicated to presenting an objective perspective on the media we all love.

    The Princess Bride is hands down my favorite movie. The guys break it down and draw new insights that I never knew or thought of. It’s a good listen, without talking over your head. It’s a conversation you’d have with friends or around the dinner table. Give it a try, and learn more about your favorite movies and directors!

    Really Enjoyed Until They Denigrated Fans
    UPDATED: By and large I’ve really enjoyed this podcast and their analysis but I got to the Mad Max series and it really gave me serious pause. They continuously insult the intelligence of fans of these movies. First they say there must only be two kinds of people who like “Mad Max”- those that were of age when I came out and grew up with the movie (ie. nostalgia) or “film snobs who really don’t like it but say they do cause they feel they have to.” What an incredibly insulting statement to make about fans of this film. Mad Max won multiple awards, has a 90% on RT, and has a huge fan base. Perhaps you don’t get the appeal, that’s fine. But don’t insult those that do. Next they say that fans who say they love the editing in Fury Road “actually mean they like the cinematography, not the editing.” Fury Road won 13 AWARDS for Best Editing- including the Academy Award and numerous film critics awards. But none of them know the difference between cinematography and editing? Seriously. It’s beyond crass. Any film reviewer who asserts that THEIR read of a movie is the final word and anyone who disagrees clearly doesn’t know anything about film is pretentious, snobbish, and truly short sighted. Clearly a portion of people who might listen to a podcast about any film are probably fans of it. Instead of insulting them when you don’t like the film, why not ask them to engage with you by writing or calling in with their takes? Really disappointing.

    Amazingly Fun
    UPDATING MY REVIEW SINCE I WROTE THE FIRST ONE THREE YEARS AGO WHEN IT WAS JUST FOCUSED ON DAVID FINCHER: The show’s great. It’s equal parts funny, informed, informative, and spirited. The chemistry between the hosts is terrific. I usually start listening while applying my first regimen of moisturizer in the morning, which usually takes about an hour. I’ll then wrap up listening to the podcast while I boil some peanuts nd then throw them out because boiled peanuts are one of the grossest things ever invented. Thank goodness this podcast keeps me rooted in anything but boiled peanuts.

    Maybe learn actors names?
    It’s 2023 and you don’t know how to pronounce Saorsie Ronan or Lea Seydoux, but you can complain about aspect ratio for an hour? A couple dumb bros with nothing interesting to say. This is a pretty worthless podcast in an over saturated field.

    A deep dive into each and every film of our favorite directors
    What started as the House of Fincher, now retitled Houselights, the podcast is a film by film analysis of our favorite directors. For the first set, the crew studied David Fincher starting with his music videos, all the way through to his TV series. For me, it was a great excuse to revisit these films and listen to opinion and analysis about each. Second is the films of Nolan, a director I personally don’t enjoy as much so it’ll be interesting to see what the discussions bring. I hope this series continues to other directors, well done!

    Fincher is one of the greatest filmmakers working right now. The hosts give a lot of great insights to his work. Cool concept for a podcast.
