shakurav1Easily one of my top favoritesThis is not only my favorite Westerns podcast, But also right now, one of my favorite podcasts period. it’s a veritable course in movie westerns. it reminds me of another favorite podcast of mine, Out Of the Past podcast. That was an audio course in film noir. And although that one ended a long time ago, I still listen to episodes over and over again, like a good audiobook or audio course. And while this one is still going, I’ve already found myself listening to certain episodes more than once. I especially like the episodes where there is a lecture that one of the hosts has given. But the discussions on movies are also just great. Both entertaining and educational.Highly recommended. Actually, for me, I’d give this my highest recommendation.

CMonsalveThe Best Western…PodcastThe first of several, (and formerly favorite), western cinema podcast I listened to was “Westerns With Dad”. It was very entertaining, but “How the West was Cast” takes this genre to another level. It is not only entertaining but insightful, intelligent, and incisive. I enjoy its discusions on westerns ranging from classic, (High Noon), revisionist, (Little Big Man), box office flops, (The Lone Ranger) and contentious (Heaven’s Gate). I also enjoy the deep dives into some of the more obscure elements of film, such as scores and costumes. This is a must for anyone with any interest in westerns or any fan of film history in general.

JGinSeoulOne of the best podcasts on westernsThis is a great podcast for intelligent discussion on westerns. I like the conversation between the hosts as well as the guests. I’ve learned a lot from the pod and added a lot of films to my watchlist If they do a full episode on My Darling Clementine I’ll add a 6th star.

jtr4Best of the WestThe best podcast on Westerns, bar none. And one of my favorite podcasts on any subject. The mix of academic and industry perspectives makes for fascinating discussion and rewards multiple listenings. Their eclectic guests have expanded my appreciation for a genre that I thought was over, and shown me a whole subculture of likeminded aficionados.

Steve HockensmithInformative, intelligent, insightful......and I'm sure it's many other "in-" words to boot. Suffice it to say if you're looking for serious (but fun!) discussions of the Western film genre, give "How the West Was 'Cast" a listen. Anyone with a love for Western movies is sure to be hooked.

310YumaA must listen for western movie fansIf you love westerns movies and the history of how they were made, why they were made and who made them then you will enjoy How The West Was Cast. If you are like me, you have watched these westerns multiple times. The podcast adds a whole new layer to these films and makes rewatching them that more fun with all of the new information you learn about these films.

Horse OperaBravoExcellent podcast, I listen often. Very informative. I particularly enjoyed the episode on western film scores, also the one about hats. I’d like to hear more on Spaghetti Westerns.

ZiusudraMy Heroes Have Always Been CowboysI grew up with Westerns. The first movie I ever saw was Hondo in 3-D and seeing the The Magnificent 7 first run in the theatres remains a treasured memory, as was seeing A Fistful of Dollars and The Wild Bunch and many others. Also, I had the benefit of the great era of TV Westerns while growing up,my favorites being Maverick and Have Gun Will Travel. Because of my love of westerns, I’ve searched many times for podcasts on the genre and there is no doubt but that this is the very best. Andrew and Matthew are incredibly knowledgeable and I can’t think of a single episode in which I didn’t learn something new and because of their insights later saw a film that I had seen many times in a different light. Many thanks, looking forward to what you’re planning for 2024.

Ethan McGuire CollinsThe Best of the More Academic Film PodcastsThere are very few podcasts centered around the Western genre, and even fewer are good. This is one of the best, and it gives you a slightly more academic, though still interesting and engaging, take than another of the better ones, Hellbent for Letterbox.
