The Good Enough Mother

31

The role of being a Mother offers us the potential for incredible expansion, growth, and power, while also being one of – if not THE – most challenging, undervalued, and taken for granted roles in the world. Motherhood Studies Sociologist, researcher, and single Mother, Dr Sophie Brock hosts The Good Enough Mother (TGEM) podcast with an aim to change how Motherhood is culturally defined and individually experienced. TGEM draws its name from a theorist and pediatrician Winnicott, who highlighted the ways ‘good enough’ parenting is actually what is best for our children – not perfectionism. The podcast centres the Mother as the starting point for conversations with experts and change-makers who are passionate about seeing social, cultural, and institutional change to better support Mothers and therefore our families, and communities.

    Amazing podcast
Sophie is so well-versed in all things motherhood and does a great job of breaking things down and educating her listeners on all the intricacies of being a mother. Absolutely brilliant show! Highly recommend for all moms- has been so healing for me in this critical, patriarchal society

    Soothing and thought-provoking for mothers
Dr. Sophie Brock has so much insight on modern motherhood and how women may learn to view ourselves in a healthier way (instead of as patriarchal motherhood wants us to view ourselves). I highly recommend this podcast.

    My missing piece!
This podcast is giving words and life to so much of what I have experienced as a mother for the past 6 years. I am so glad I found this podcast and Sophie’s work because it is helping me to make sense of what it is that I have been trying to do my own work around when it comes to shifting the paradigms around modern motherhood!

What a gift for the soul!
Listened to the episode on the misconceptions of good enough mothering. What a beautiful, nurturing, empowering talk for moms and an amazing tool to push back against very harmful societal constructs. Amazing work! Thank you!

    Helpful!
The advice about making time with the kids easier on mom (give mom a scuba tank instead of just letting her out for air) has helped me develop strategies that make me lose my temper less. Just trying to be a calm perfect mom does not work and this podcast helps ID and cope with underlying issues behind our issues as moms.

    Much needed dissemination of research
Dr Sophie’s podcast is a must listen for modern mothers. The care she takes in dismantling ideas, both common and lesser known, that yield new understandings. Most episodes are worthy of multiple listens to take away all the layers of information. Thank you for sharing this research as it’s more relevant than it’s appreciated to be.

    Important, evidence-based motherhood insights
I stumbled upon this podcast and am so grateful I did! Sophie provides such critically important insights into parenting in our modern age. By melding science, psychology, as well as a solid dose of empathy, she provides a needed antidote to so much junk out there about how to parent. Instead, her podcasts give a foundational base so parents understand their own tendencies and the developmental stages of children and can enter parenting with more knowledge and kindness toward themselves and others.

Changing the Cultural Narrative of Motherhood
The name is fabulous! I am grateful for Sophie’s desire to change how Motherhood is Culturally defined and how she melds together her insights as Sociologist and Mother to bring rich conversations about Mothering. These unique conversations are inspiring, educational, connecting & insightful! As a Mother, Registered Nurse, Birth Worker & a person with a Degree in Sociology I truly appreciate the lense from which Sophie Speaks. There have been multiple episodes that I have listened to several times: Episode 38, 39, 44, 43, and 26 to name a few! Sophie cover’s many important topics, but Motherhood and anger, particularly episode 38 has been so potent for myself, I have listened to it twice already. Sophie explains things in a relatable way and gives tips that feel possible to put into practice. I appreciate her authentic shares about her own journey of mothering her daughter

Nourishment for my tired mama heart.
I found Dr. Sophie on Instagram well over a year ago and have watched her stories and have been absorbing her content on that platform. I finally made my way over to her podcast and I am so bummed I didn’t do it sooner. This podcast is full of evidence-based information that is helpful, soothing, and nourishing. This would have saved me so much heartache as a new mother, but I’m so thankful for it now and moving forward. Every mom needs Dr. Sophie’s content in their lives.

    Soothing podcast
Just when I thought I was the only mom to experience ( input anything here), I have found I am not alone. I also like how soothing her voice is.
