The 1000 Hours Outside Podcast

721

Childhood is finite at just shy of 9.5 million minutes. We only get one shot at it. One of the biggest decisions we make is how we will use that time. Research has confirmed time and time again that what children are naturally and unabashedly drawn to, unrestricted outside play, contributes extensively to every area of childhood development. The importance here cannot be understated. Every year we aim to match nature time with the average amount of American kid screen time (which is currently 1200 hours per year). Have a goal. Track your time outside. Take back childhood. Inspire others.

    Inspiring & Encouraging
This is my go-to podcast and one that I share frequently. I love Ginny’s enthusiasm, curiosity, authenticity, and how she champions her guests and their work. I learn so much and am encouraged by the great thinkers and doers that share on the show, and by the community of people spending more time outside, less time on screens, and providing space for kids to be kids in our fast-paced, over scheduled culture.

    My go-to podcast
I feel like I quote something I’ve learned from this podcast almost anytime I talk with friends. It’s my go to podcast and I try not to miss an episode. It has enriched my life and I am thankful to Ginny for all the heart and soul she pours into each episode!

    We love Ginny!
Hands down my favorite podcast. Thank you Ginny for your thoughtful questions, your humble insights, and your conviction when it comes to the best life for our children and our families. I was drawn to Ginny by the screen-free childhood message but have been listening faithfully for all the other wonderful insight that I’ve gleaned as well. Thank you, Ginny!

    Congratulations!
In honor of Ginny’s 500th episode I’ve decided to finally write my first review! It is long overdue! Her authentic joy and expertise is a welcome consolation to my burdens as a young mother finding my place in the midst of a constantly shifting world. Her podcast is approachable and will leave you with a long list of books to read for yourself. Thank you for helping me become the best version of myself and who I want to be!

    Edifying and Encouraging
I’ve really enjoyed the episodes I’ve listened to. As a former public school teacher spanning the last 15 years, I’ve seen many of the negative symptoms of our current culture. As a mom for the last 6.5 years, I’ve been burdened to restore independent play for my 2 boys. I do not see my role as their conductor of fun and they are the better for it. Love listening!

    Love this podcast!!
I have 4 kids and don’t have much time. When I do get free time to listen to something, this is one of my go to podcasts. I almost always learn something new and valuable dealing with parenthood, child development and my own well-being. Ginny is such a great interviewer! She keeps it thoughtful, entertaining and relatable. There’s SO MANY good episodes, I can’t keep up.

    Favorite Podcast
I have been listening to this podcast for about 3 years now absolutely love it! I always feel inspired, intrigued, or motivated to a) read the book she discusses with the author, b) try some of the parenting tips, recipes, etc. the guest discusses, c) dive deeper into the topic, business, or person who was featured. I often find myself nodding along and saying YESSSS! to things as the conversation progresses. I enjoy the variety of people she brings on as guests and how she always has pages of notes from their books and truly values what the guest is passionate about. She is a fabulous interviewer and finds ways to connect the audience to the guest and the topic in a way that naturally flows. Yes, her mission is getting families outside, but her podcast is so much more than that.

    Must follow podcast
Started listening when my son was 5 months old and it has absolutely filled my life and parenting journey with a wealth of confidence, joy, knowledge and Fun as I let my kid be a kid outdoors, but also have some really solid science backing that and encouraging it all the time! Absolutely love this podcast.

    The BEST parenthood podcast!
I stumbled upon 1000 Hours Outside completely by accident and was immediately hooked. Ginny is the most knowledgeable host. It always amazes me how studied she is on each guest. The guests are all so unique and have their own experience to offer. Love, love, love this podcast!

Trying to take the Meat with the Bones
I was really enjoying this podcast until a recent episode had a rude comment about Florida. As a native Floridian, I’m probably overly sensitive about the topic but it isn’t in good taste to make a blanket assumption about a whole state full of people. Just for the record, there are lots of homebirthing, homesteading, homeschooling folks here.

    My most shared podcast
I don’t know if I was initially drawn in by Ginny’s genuine nature and relatability, or for the inspiring and fascinating interviews she conducts, but this podcast is immensely valuable. If it wasn’t free, I’d pay to listen because I gain so much. It’s given me many new tools as a parent; I feel well equipped for navigating the challenges of being a mom in our modern world. Thank you, Ginny, for leading this movement and helping to restore the best of childhood.

    Conflicted about content
I really enjoy parts of this podcast. Ginny is so enthusiastic and curious and you can tell she enjoys interviewing her guests. Kirk Martin’s episode was so helpful and he’s been a favorite follow of mine since. I love Ginny’s mission and passion for getting outside with your kids. However, there is a clear and consistent “pseudoscience” bent to this podcast. Some of her guests are promoting fringe or blatantly false ideas about seed oils, vaccination, pharmaceuticals, even neurodivergence and mental health. Ginny has also been open about her support of RFK Jr., which is concerning. I think open dialogue about a wide variety of topics is important, but I’d love to hear guests who aren’t promoting misinformation in the name of “health”.

    Love the Podcast!
I listen to several podcasts now and Ginny is still my favorite! I have been introduce to so many new people and ideas by listening to her podcasts. I have listened to several books from authors that she interviews and have learned so much! Her new focus on health and her guests have changed my family’s lives in how we eat. I’m so grateful to have found her podcast.

    Homeschooled daughters loves this podcast
I love listening to your podcast on car rides. My kids (ages 17-11) are also with me. I hadn’t paid attention to when they stopped listening to their music and started listening along with me but they do! Recently we got back in the car and they asked me to put your unfinished podcast back on, and even more recently my oldest who will be a nanny abroad while finishing her senior year of homeschooling has been listening to your podcast on her own time. Love this! Your topics are so relevant on how to raise happy healthy kids! We are on year 3 of our 1000 hours outside goal. Thank you for what you do!

The best thing parents can listen to
So many things to say… this podcast is everything I (and all parents) need to hear. The lightheartedness paired with directness addresses some hard things we all need to hear in the most loving way. I refer to Ginny by first name and have told every person I know about this podcast. Go back and listen to every one of these episodes, apply what you learn, and your kids and family will thank you for it.

    I cry every time
This is one of my top shared podcasts. Ginny is. A regular reminder to me from Jesus, to slow down, go outside, listen to the symphony of nature, and trust that YOU are your child’s best teacher. Thank you, Ginny. I cry in every episode as the water streams into the desert of my “little years” soul. It was a joy to preorder your book today.

Just finished the Forest is Magic episode
I listened to this on my drive home from a camping trip and was just enamored with excitement and totally wished I had heard it before the camping trip. 😂As my kids slept on the way home, I found myself drifting off into an imaginative fairy tale land with my kids. I got home, immediately bought the book and can’t wait to read it aloud with my kids. What a fun interview Ginny! I learned so much!

    The best!
This is such a great and important podcast that everyone should be listening to. Love everything Ginny talks about! So much valuable information for our children and their future. Especially love when Ginny has Mike from Grownowadhd on! He’s a wealth of knowledge when it comes to our kid’s childhood. Appreciate them both so much!

    Like sunshine!
True to her advice to get outside, Ginny’s podcast feels like stepping outside on a beautiful sunny day when inside you’re feeling cloudy and glum. Ginny is that encouraging optimistic friend you call on when you’re full of parenting doubts. She’s got the expertise and knowledge to back up her warm and friendly advice. She’s the perfect blend of fact-based knowledge and fun! I’m so glad to have found her voice and perspective while on my homeschool parenting journey. Your family will benefit greatly from listening in! THANK YOU GINNY!

    Excellent discussions!
I just recently started listening to this podcast, and I’m hooked. There’s always a good discussion. Ginny exemplifies how adults should be curious learners and find beauty in God’s world and what it holds. I have recommended it to several friends already. Keep up the good work!

    Teacher Recommended!
I am officially addicted to this podcast right now and just saved all three of the episodes I listened to this week to share with others. I am a middle school teacher and mom of two young adults. I have seen so much change over the past 25 years. This show is full of great wisdom, insight, and advice for today’s parents and society as a whole. The guests and interviews are phenomenal. There is so much to reflect on and think about implementing.
  • becca o'leary
    disappointing turn.
really sad to see this podcast dive into diet culture. demonizing food groups is unnecessary and also totally unrelated to the importance of spending time outside, unplugged, in nature. as if parents don’t have enough to worry about, here you are giving more (stupid) things to worry about. shame on you.
  • mrs.msri
    Genuine, knowledgeable and uplifting!
Ginny, you have become my virtual mentor! Your conversations have brought so much light to my world. As a mom on 4 girls 6 and under we’ve always tried to get outside as much as possible, even in the luls of ppd. I’ve been listening for about 2 months and you have brought me so much hope and joy knowing that there are other moms like me looking to enrich their children’s lives and trying to become better versed in how to go about doing so in such a chaotic society. God bless you! 💕

    💛
I have loved this podcast for a while but lately it has been SO GOOD. Ginny, you are on fire! I love that you’re digging into “controversial” topics like food and faith. Keep up the amazing work. I could never choose a favorite episode! Update: I just died laughing during the episode with Morgan Cutlip when one of you said “there is no break from making dinner but death”. I am right there in that!
  • Roberta Podcasts
    Great with exceptions
I am thankful for this podcast and enjoy the host’s joyful and curious interview style. She’s one of the best interviewers I’ve heard. I love the interviews about getting our kids outside (great name and philosophy!) - the whys and hows. I do not, however, like the anti-science and anti-expert health stuff she promotes and have been increasingly disappointed by that content. It is therefore hard to give a rating as 90% of her episodes are 5 star and then a handful are 1s. (Please don’t promote MAHA conspiracy nonsense. People are dying…)

Diverse Topics, Inspirational Content, Game Changing for This Stay at Home Mom!

    Too much religious propaganda
We’re a no-screens household with a big backyard and a free-range mentality to outdoor play. I thought I’d love this podcast, and I can deal with the “God talk” occasionally (i.e., “God created such a beautiful playground for our children, go use it!”). But all the commercials are not just religious but closeminded religious or misleading. Ask your insurance collective how they treat babies with hypoplastic left heart syndrome. Spoiler, they don’t cover it. My kiddo had HLHS and racked up 2 million dollars of medical bills keeping them alive. Our friend whose baby has HLHS had a religious insurance collective and was repeatedly reassured that congenital heart defects were covered… until she went into labor, in which case they said “whoops, but not HLHS”. Go on, ask your insurance what medical issues aren’t covered, and then go ahead and pray that your God doesn’t blight your family with those health issues. And for Ginny to talk about a no-screens lifestyle, only to shill a Christian media app for kids… ok, so screen time is okay if it’s religious propaganda?

    Evangelical Podcast in Disguise
This isn’t a nature podcast, this is an evangelical christian podcast masquerading as a nature podcast for families. Full of misinformation and hypocrisy as is typical with evangelicals. AVOID.

By far my favorite podcast! So encouraging and incredibly helpful in finding amazing resources for parenting and just living life in general.

    Endearing
Ginny is so well read and applies everything she learns from the books and guests she engages. She is so endearing and all the guests love to talk with her and I love to listen! I go away feeling like I’ve hung out with a mom friend and learned a ton in the process.

    Becoming too religious & political
I have been listening to 1000 hours since the beginning and used to consider it my primary inspiration in parenting. I have listened to every episode but I feel like I’m no longer welcome here. The content has become increasingly political and religious in a way that feels alienating to me and your loyal democrat &/or secular audience. Giving kids unstructured outdoor play & having a full childhood should not be a partisan or religious topic. I’m also passionate about getting kids off screens and outside, so I’m disappointed that you are limiting the reach of that powerful message by featuring evangelical ads and politically-motivated conversations. I wish you & the podcast the best and hope that you will return to the core message that can transform all families.

A voice in my life I desperately needed
Ginny is one of my favorite people and I don’t even know her. I glean wisdom from her even when she is interviewing someone else for their wisdom. She is compassionate, kind, and always so open about her life, struggles, the reality of motherhood, and finding balance when it feels like it’s impossible to choose the “right” thing. As a mom of four littles I am so thankful for voices like Ginny’s. There is guidance in the form of information displayed in a compassionate way. You can tell she really cares about her message, and she compels me to look at things a different way when I’m stuck in a rut. Oh, and my kids and I get outside more than ever too!

    Disappointed
I used to love this podcast and following Ginny. Unfortunately after learning about their unkindness and berating of multiple churches in the area I will no longer be able to listen and share. It's unfortunate that they have chosen to treat others this way. I really thought this podcast and these people were different.

    Long-Time Listener
After listening to this podcast for a few years now, I can confidently say it just keeps getting better. Ginny’s ability to ask insightful, well-researched questions and truly listen makes every episode feel meaningful and engaging. She is incredibly well-read, and it shows in the depth of the conversations she has with her guests. What keeps me coming back is the perfect blend of topics—raising children, getting outside, and embracing a more intentional, connected life. Every episode offers wisdom, practical tips, and a refreshing perspective that leaves me inspired and motivated to create more meaningful moments with my family. If you’re a parent looking for thoughtful conversations on raising kids and encouraging an outdoor lifestyle, this is the podcast for you. After years of listening, I can say without a doubt—this is one of the best out there. Five stars!
