The Vietnamese Boat People

93

The Vietnamese Boat People podcast is stories of hope, survival and resilience. Between 1975 to 1992, almost two million Vietnamese risked their lives to flee oppression and hardship after the Vietnam War, in one of the largest mass exoduses in modern history. Escaping by boat, many found freedom in foreign land, many were captured and brutally punished, and many did not survive the journey. This population of people are known as the ‘Vietnamese Boat People‘ and these are their stories. Stories that need to be documented
It’s one thing to read about something in a history book. It’s another to document numerous first had accounts. Such an important podcast for preserving these stories.

    Amazing
Tears are rolling down my eyes as I’m listening to these stories. I was privileged to be raised in America. I went through years of loneliness not understanding why my parents were they way they were. But this podcast helped me visualize my parent’s history, and set my burden free. Thank you.

    Emotionally touching and relatable
First episode reeled me in good. The way the father describes the escape from Đà Nẵng makes me feel like I was there. I came to the states when I was 1 and I grew up surrounded by other Vietnamese people. My heart for my homeland and my people shakes listening to these episodes

    Every story is heartbreaking
Every story of the brave Vietnamese boat people who risked so much to live freely brings me to tears. I feel so blessed to walk alongside them and proud of the journey our people made to turn dust into dreams. Bless you all and keep telling your stories! Together we preserve history and pass on our heritage.

Oh my goodness! I’ve been wanting to find a Viet-Ameri podcast for a long time! It’s a perfect blend of the 1st Gen & 2nd Gen. This is such an iconic piece & will be documented for the future 3rd Gen and so on.

My mom escaped Vietnam in the 70’s when she was 8 with her dad and three brothers. I’ve always heard bits and pieces of stories, but lately have been wanting to learn more. Listening to these stories is teaching me so much. Thank you!

Thank you so much for this podcast. I am working on the dramaturgy for the play Vietgone by playwright Qui Nguyen who is a second generation refugee from Vietnam. This podcast really helped me to feel and see this experience from real people and their real stories so I can better understand the play, and the historical inspirations.
