This Sounds Serious

In 1991, TV producer Kirk Todd was supposed to direct his first movie, Grand Casino, but the movie was never made. Kirk disappeared with the film’s budget and was revealed to be a con man named Jeremy Weaver. We follow host Gwen Radford as she tracks down the victims and puts together the pieces of this con three decades later.

    Blew me away
Outstanding in every way. Loved listening to this show—best I’ve ever heard. Hysterical and engaging. Wish new seasons would never stop coming!!

Absolutely love it. Please continue to make more seasons
This show is so good. I love it. It’s a mix of comedy and mystery. It’s perfect. Everybody does such a good job. I hope they continue to make more! ***2/7/23*** I randomly check back to see if there’s any new episodes. I am so bummed there’s nothing. The dry humor mixed with the mystery was perfect. I’ve never laughed so much plus got pulled in from the storyline and I’ve listened to a lot of podcasts. PLEASE give us more. I’ve tried to google other series similar to this but nothing has come close.

I loved the first season BUT…
…it’s fiction! Okay, I’m stupid. I came to this podcast under the naive impression that it was about real events. It blew me away, amazing. Then in the final credits I heard a lot of names, read the log line and saw that it’s fictional. So yes, it’s brilliant work as a complicated radio play, but I feel so deceived. A big letdown for me.

    Too funny!
Wow - this is an excellent show. I love the mockumentary style and this one is done well. Acting and sound design are excellent. Have listened to seasons 1 and 2 and it holds up. Season 3 is out there and I will be listening soon. Thank you for the wonderful entertainment!

    Great Acting, Hysterically Funny
The writing is clever and laugh-out-lound funny in all three seasons. The actors do an incredible job with the material. It is really one of the best podcasts out there.

Season 3 is best one yet

    Exceptional Story Telling
The first season is unbelievably well made. The story telling is gripping and it keeps you on the edge of your seat till the last few seconds. There were many points I laughed out loud in the office while I binged the entire first season. On to the second season! Great great great podcast!

All should give this series a listen
Very funny, interesting stories, a quick listen for any commute. Highly recommend at least sampling the first few episodes of season 1. I was hooked after the first episode. I do believe season 1 was the strongest, season 2 was not quite as strong in the story but I still loved it. Season 3 was not my favorite, just didn’t love story. All are so well made, I will listen to anything this group publishes in future. Great work.

    Best one yet!
I loved all three seasons but Grand Casino is the best one yet! Well done.

    Trust Me
You won’t be disappointed! Listen and enjoy 😊

Well produced and lots of fun.
A great send up/omage to the true crime genre of podcasts. The show is full of excellent characters, voice actors, and sound design and every season is worth a listen.

    1 and 2 are good
But 3 immediately starts off as unbelievable. You have to at least make it feel plausible, and season 3 totally misses the mark. Season 1 was their best one honestly, now it’s just been downhill from there.

    My new favorite podcast
I binged this series in days. It was laugh out loud funny and that says a lot. I can’t wait for a new season hopefully?!!!

Funniest podcast I’ve heard in my lifetime
I found this from a list of podcasts that The New Yorker recommended. Binge worthy and just perfect for Quarantine ennui. 👍🏼😷🤣😂

    Fiction find of the year
Absolutely love This Sounds Serious- started with season 3 “Grand Casino” & working my way back. A fantastic pastiche of the serial style crime pod— love the characters, the humor, and the production is phenomenal. Absolutely nailed it y’all

    Dull
Not spoofy enough to be funny. Not interesting enough to be played so straight. True Crime is bad enough, and somehow most fake true crime is just worse. Who on earth has this much time to waste? Mostly good acting & narration, tho.

    Of few
Good storytelling the way those other titles can’t produce.

Best Podcast I’ve found this Year
Pure genius. Seriously. Carly Pope, the voice of Gwen, is spectacular in this. When you’re listening to this, you can easily forget it’s a fictional podcast. The editing & voice acting is amazing & expertly done. Since covid, I’ve had a lot of free time. So I’ve listened to A LOT of podcasts. Some of them try hard, but miss the mark when it comes to voice acting. This one wins 2020 in my book. We are living in the Golden Age of Content, and if you need a podcast that is hilarious at times AND has an underlying mystery, this is for you.

    Must Listen!
Fantastic and hilarious! Keep them coming!

    Hilarious and Brilliant
Such a great find. This fictional True Crime podcast definitely makes you feel like you’re listening to a true story with ridiculous enough details that it has to be fake. I love the voices and the story.

    Great discovery
Just discovered that Castbox has originals, this podcast is beautifully narrated, masterpiece in story telling
  • moppet_mi
    Excellent
I dislike True Crime as a concept, but especially as an entertainment genre, for most of the obvious reasons. Love faux-True Crime, though! This brilliantly mocks the genre, using dull and damaging - to razor sharp - wit and parody. Sure, it gets a bit meta in spots, but that’s expected given what they’re doing. The endings aren’t surprising if you’re familiar with the tropes and cliches, but that’s perfectly fine, too, and not really the point. Well done, people. Looking forward to more from this team.

    Spoiler???
How do you put an ad on season one episodes that feature the guy from season one giving spoilers about season one??? Not much point in listening to the rest...
  • SoJunghan
    Well made podcast
Really great show! The stories are very interesting, and Carly Pope does a good job leading listeners through them.

First 2 seasons yes third NO.
The first 2 seasons of this podcast were really great. The third however, grand casino, was just terrible. I’m still hopeful season 4 will get back to the standard of the start of this podcast.

    Hooked!
Love this podcast. Not sure why it’s never shown up on my feed before. It’s lively, funny, great sound and editing. “Gwen Close”: hysterical!

    Once again...epic
Bravo ...you all delivered another season of greatness. Grand Casino lives along side the first two seasons with like wit, comedy and the infamous “this sounds serious” plot twist ending. Standing Ovation !!! Thank you Cindy

    I love this podcast!
I love this podcast! I can’t get enough! I have re-listened it over and over. I love season one! Thank you for helping me keep my sanity during this time. Keep up the great work!

    How long?
I feel as if, taken as a collective art form, there’s something fundamentally depreciative about podcasts. Whether is this is caused by limitations of the medium, or prolific over-production; no podcast is left untouched. Over time, and regardless of the initial quality presented, podcasts just lose steam. The more novel the starting point, the faster the descent. Such seems to be the case with “This Sounds Serious.“ Season one was brilliant- I tore straight through it. I recall season two as being entertaining, though I can barely remember any of it. But season three is... Well, not great. If you’ve never listened to this podcast before, do you self a favor and check out season one! If you’re returning to this podcast, and wondering if you should tune in to season three, I can’t recommend it. I’ll probably stay for now, but I doubt I’ll come back for season four. I’d also aggressively suggest that the creators consider taking a long break before tackling season four, or move on to something else entirely. I think this one has probably run it’s course.

    Hilarious
I listen to a lot of true crime and they have nailed this parody show. Lots of little jokes in the background. I absolutely love this.
  • Chanmannius22
    So funny and interesting
I listen to a lot of fiction podcasts, and this is one of my favorites. Did not expect this type of humor, reminds me of Arrested Development for your ears. Love it!

Can’t believe I’m just finding this! Truly awesome!

    Season 1
I just found this podcast yesterday, and started all the way at the beginning. Binge listened to Season 1 over the last 24 hours, and that ending just blew my mind!
  • Hammontre
    Wonderful
Update: Season 3 is off to a great start. This is still one of my favorite podcasts. Understated and brilliant. This podcast is wonderful. It's whimsical, dark, intelligent, and hilarious, and yet somehow it's entirely believable. The writing is incredible, and the acting is great. It's hard come up with a genre to describe this show, but I'd recommend it to anyone.
  • Crprtr
    Hmmm
Halfway through episode 1 when I figured it out
  • TC Allie
    It’s fiction
I think it needs to clearly state it is not based on or about a real story.
  • rocknroll4ever!!
    Best podcast ever
Binge listened season 3 and it was amazing! Well worth the $5 and can’t thank you all enough for the most enjoyable podcast out there. My new favorite thing to tell my friends it’s a real “true crime” podcast and letting them figure it out for themselves 🤣
  • sarahhorton321
    Hysterically entertaining
Absolutely hysterical. I haven’t enjoyed a podcast like this one in a long time. Truly hoping for a third season! *the song at the end of the second season is brilliant 😂
  • Beachhybreezy
    Amazing!
So good, so funny!! Best podcast. Just binged all of season 1 in an afternoon!! So so so good!!! My first fictional podcast I’ve listened to and now I’m hooked!!
  • suomimei
    Such a fun podcast!
Really great for fans of true crime and comedy. Made me laugh out loud! Warning: some other reviews contain spoilers! It's much better to go in not expecting anything
  • Gizzyme
    You’re right!!!
The story of twin brothers Chuck and Daniel just didn’t sit right with me, but when you turned it around and said it was Chuck that killed Daniel...that’s when it all fell into place for me and all the pieces fit! I believe you are absolutely right. It’s the only solution that makes the story fall into place. You should have taken your theory to the police officer that was so sure that Daniel murdered Chuck. Great job! Kudos to you.
  • Ellewoods2001
Why does everyone sound like an actor?
I like the story so far but why does it sound like everyone interviewed is an actor? Doesn’t sound like normal people at all. Is it a re-enactment?
