Hack or Slash - A Horror Movie Review Podcast

131

Each week a panel of horror fans discuss horror movies past and present. We believe horror is for everyone, regardless of how familiar you are with the genre, or which flavor of fear you fancy most. We dissect new releases, compare originals to reboots, and tell you whether or not the movies are a hack (a waste of time) or a slash (totally killer - pun intended).

    Very modern takes
Discussions are fine. They know their modern but they’re just not as knowledgeable about the genre as shows like Exploding Heads ( plus they’re funny) 22 Shots of Moodz and Horror and Jay of the Dead’s shows.

Not a fan of any of the hosts and their takes are terrible.

    Thank You
I used to listen to this one horror movie review podcast that I will not name, but had to unsubscribe because I absolutely could not stand one of the hosts, and it was becoming stressful to listen to. So, I searched for a replacement and found you guys and have not been disappointed. So, thank you for that!
  • Unpopular Opinion Giver
    So weak
The more you listen, the more you understand that these people don’t understand even basic points of many horror movies. This is an easy pass.

    Great movie review podcast
These podcast hosts have thorough, interesting discussions about movies. Their opinions reinforced some of my own feelings, but I also gained new insights. I found the podcast when looking for reviews of Wolf Man. I’ll certainly listen to more.

    Slash
At first the hosts opinions really got under my skin when I would hear them tear down movies that I loved but despite not agreeing with a lot of their tales I do love listening to the podcast. Everybody is entitled to their opinions on horror movies and the differing point of views make this podcast a slash and a must listen

    Just not my taste
Hey sorry, if your an old school gen x horror fan this is not for you. The hosts are great but get upset about words in movies that hurt their feelings. Great for a new generation just not mine.

    Boring…just pass
Was looking for something new, a horror podcast should not disappoint. It did…the hosts are not entertaining and with the newest material available, this should have been at least decent. #fail #trash #pass

    too normie for me
Good podcast if you’re new to movies, not that educated in film history and wanna start at a more basic and mainstream point. It’s not for me but hey, some people will enjoy!

Cares more about money than fans
I used to be an avid listener and a huge fan of the show, until now there are only episodes that you can get for subscribing. Basically the show has gone Hollywood and only cares about making money instead of connecting with the community and their fanbase. Truly disappointing.

    Great pod
Always want to discuss a horror film once I leave the theater, don’s always have the people to discuss it with. Listening to this pod is a pretty close substitute. Keep up the good work!

Hack, this podcast is a hack.
This group of so called horror enthusiast are just stoked to hear themselves speak. Don't waste your time on this one.

    People are weird…
I had to sort the low ratings to see what the people said…all I see is low IQ. As someone who has sampled many a horror movie podcasts, this crew is what I was looking for. It’s real opinions, on the actual movie reviewed, thoughtful commentary and discussion as opposed to podcasters who think they’re interesting and stand up comedians. If you’re here for a entertaining conversation with friends, then welcome !

    Great podcast
Hack or Slash is by far THE best horror review podcast. I’ve listened to quite a bit of these kind of podcasts, but HOS is the only one that I continue to listen to. I like how each host gives their opinions with actual discussions between all of them. It’s nice that they break it into 2 parts so that there are no spoilers in case someone hasn’t seen the movie.

Wow, and wow. If you’ve been searching for that new Podcast to indulge in (that’s something other than the worn out flavor of true crime or cooking or wellness or what have you’s) and really love all things Horror, you’ll be doing yourself a huge favor by checking this out and supporting it’s growth. The diversity of the caster’s voices and the engrossing conversations will put a smile on your face, steep your interests into new-to-you titles, and sometimes recharge or challenge your opinions old cherished titles and franchises. This gang of individuals always deliver fodder worth coming back for. Start at the beginning, or at any title that grips your anchor, and just let it play on…

    Scary, Good Fun!
Listening to the group come at movies with all different points of view is fun to hear. The dynamic between everyone works really well and Kris has a perfect voice for podcasts. I could listen to her read nutrition facts on a label. Keep up the amazing work. As a dude who is only slightly older, born in 1984, I’ve enjoyed re-watching some old favorites and watching things I’ve never seen while listening to films be broken down intelligently. There are so many movie review podcasts that have an analysis to the tune of “it’s a good movie, I like it” and that’s as in-depth as they get. You folks are fantastic!
  • Vaultimate
Hard to follow(Talk to me episode)
The three hosts bounced around to a degree that I couldn’t really get a good grasp of the narrative of the movie. Characters are mentioned with little to no set up or background. There is also a lot of inserting themselves, via “this character went through this, my friend went through this.” …And? If I don’t have a good handle on who the character is (much less the “friend,”)how does that contribute to the the listener’s engagement. Basically if there was a forth host who hadn’t seen the movie they would have been stopping the conversation every few minutes to ask, “Who is…?” or “Wait, when did that happen?”
  • Miggymack
This podcast is definitely a Slash!
If you’re looking for a fun horror podcast, this is the podcast for you! The hosts all bring their own horror backgrounds to the podcast, and love the spirited debates on if a movie is worth your time or something you may want to pass on.

    Elite Horror Movie Podcast
I’m quick to recommend to this long time horror fans or new ones. Huge fan of the team and the content, and their Discord community is lovely. I appreciate a section for spoilers if I haven’t seen the film yet, and each cast member has an opportunity to really express their perspectives. They really do embrace the idea that horror is for everyone. Shout out to Mack, who loves the sub genre of sci-fi/horror, and I can’t wait for Vero to make a comeback. When I started with one episode, I found myself neck deep in their content by the end of the week. It’s easy to browse their episodes for films you’ve seen, and I’ve actually been put on to movies I wouldn’t have otherwise seen. Rather than sitting around a mic and bashing a film, they really do connect back to their own life experiences. And their fake ads? Immediately go to their Hellraiser episode and enjoy their take on a demonic Bop-It.

    Great show!
Hey guys and gals! Great show. Although I do not agree with some of the opinions on classic horror movies, (they are opinions for a reason), I love binge listening while I’m at work and at this point do not think I could get through the day without you guys! Keep up the good work! P.s I personally believe Waxwork was a good film!

    A great group of host
New listener to the show. I gotta say, I’m hooked!! The way they break down each movie is just perfect. They don’t give to much information, just enough to make you want to watch the movie they are discussing. I love all of the different options of all of the host. They make you look at horror movies in a different way.
  • The Dead Sams
    Nice
Despite some of the opinions bashing on some of my favorites I really like this podcast. Generally I’m not here for Paris or Ryan’s takes though. They are always bad and I just don’t understand the thought process of going into movies hating them already. It’s so sad to hear their cohosts gushing about some of the great information they have, then one of the two will speak up to shut it down and bring the dialogue to a complete stop with some lame negativity not even good points. It could just be the way the podcast is edited but every time it happens it’s so jarring. When they claim they can’t wait to argue about whatever they think, they end up just getting frustrated with good points being brought up and stop the argument to say “I know you’re making good points but I’m just not seeing or hearing it”. Like ew.

I do like how it is broken into two portions. The conversation between podcasters is very natural. Love the show. Glad I stumbled upon it.

This panel is awesome. Nobody holds back their true opinions and the assessments are usually dead on. I wish this podcast continued success and look forward to new movie reviews every day. Keep up the good work…

    Great listen!
I am not a horror fan myself, but I do love monster movies! This podcast is so much fun and thoughtful and takes you on a journey with some great movies with a great crew. Definitely worth the listen even if your not a fan of horror, like me!

    No sleep
I put your podcast on to try to sleep, but after about 15 minutes I’m fully invested in hearing what you think about these films! I can’t go to sleep until after the episode. You have great chemistry and I absolutely love your work. SLASH!
  • FrodoBomb
    Great show/ Greater people
Love this show because they all look past the surface of the movie and pick apart societal and cultural messages and meanings to find the true depth of a movie. They have great commentary and amazing points are made with every movie.
  • Quthaz
Love the show and the team!!
I love this show! I love the format and the flow of this podcast! The moderators are all so pleasant to listen to it makes me want to be friends with each one!!! Lol! Please keep up the amazing work you all do!!
  • BelzoraHollow3
It would be so much more enjoyable if Leah didn’t hate every good movie
The title pretty much sums it up. It’s one thing to have an opinion, but when you hate every good movie and every character in it, why did you choose to do a movie review podcast? Maybe be a professional movie critic instead.
  • Megan Bren

I’m a big horror fan and this group has really interesting, nuanced takes. I like that they explore gore, add horror canon context and range in their experience with the genre.

    A Smart Listen
Longtime listener, since 2017. Kris — awesome host. I appreciate Mack’s thoughtful contributions. They’re a mature and funny panel, and they don’t just talk about these movies on a surface level. They dig into themes and motifs, and they really deconstruct the films in a way that goes beyond satisfying the average modern horror flick lover. They analyze with a critical eye and tie into the historical and social contexts of the movies, too. Love the way they do comparisons of remakes and delve into so many factors that combine to make each movie distinct. I appreciate that the episodes have different, clearly laid out segments that are organized and feel structured and reasoned, yet they also sound like a fluid conversation. Hack or Slash feels and sounds like a professional listening experience. Love the hilarious, thematically-linked mock advertisements to lighten the atmosphere, too. It’s these extra touches, like their own theme song, that make HoS my favorite horror review podcast. Creative, thoughtful, and entertaining. Keep up the good work, guys.

Good mix of hosts. I do suggest but don’t expect highly knowledgeable on horror. But still 5 stars

    Pretty Good Pod
I was looking for some podcasts to supplement my listening to Dead and Lovely, and found this one. I like that the selection of horror movies is different than other pods I have listened to...most of the discussion is well thought out and is interesting for the most part. My main feedback is that the hack or slash ratings are often inconsistent and aren’t super helpful in determining the watchability or rating of a particular movie. In addition, while Kris is a very good host, I find that she often takes stances that contradict arguments she made for other movies that leave me with a feeling of hypocrisy. While other members seem to listen and take into account different perspectives, Kris seems determined to keep arguing her point without much objectivity. She’s much more likely to be harsh on movies with “hype” and less harsh on movies that are typically viewed as more busts. And this only arose as a problem after hearing of multiple movie discussions and finding the common threads. It’s less about her movie taste and more about how the discussion ensues and I find that kinda offputting...Although rating the babadook a hack and the perfection/new pet sematary a slash is UNFORGIVEABLE (Semi jokes😬). I appreciate your time and work on this pod and will continue to tune in for the movies that interest me.

    Great pod!
I listen to a TON of horror movie podcasts, but I just discovered this one and it’s my fav! It’s such a perfect mix of funny people having a good time, spoiler-free reviews in the first half, spoiler-heavy commentary in the second, deep dives into all the good stuff... I just really like the balance of different “segments” and I feel they’re doing something new and different here. It’s more than just a scene-by-scene recap of a horror movie- which I do like, but I think the specific questions these guys ask about each film really leads itself to much more interesting discussions. Love it!
  • T-bone 2121
    I love it!
I really enjoy hearing people that are not stoners talking about horror. They really dive into the movies. But, and this is a big but, I cannot stand Leah. I’m sorry girl but come on. You are contrary just to be different, and don’t even grasp the concepts they are discussing. It’d be fine if she was stupid and funny but nope. Other than her it’s great.
  • Abc816
    Awesome Pod!
Hack or Slash is such a great podcast. It's genuine, well thought out and overall a good time! There are so many different personalities so I promise you, there's something there for everyone! I also appreciate that the first half of the podcast doesn't contain any spoilers so if you haven't watched a movie no problem! They give you the option to tune out at a certain point if you don't want to ruin everything for yourself. It's such a great mix between comedic relief and thought provoking conversation. Well done, Hack or Slash! You're one of very few that's a go-to for me.
