The Throwback Podcast

693

Dan Hanzus and Bob Castrone love listening to music- almost as much as they love hanging out in a garage and talking about it. On The Throwback Podcast, lifelong friends revisit important albums from their past and go through them--track by track-- with fresh ears. From the classics to the cringeworthy, every week is a throwback.

Same show but new intro is much appreciated

    Mediocre Music Retrospective
Their opinions aren’t insightful or informed enough to be enriching. Their humor is repetitive and maybe a little too stuck in the 90s and early 00s. And they’re not self reflective as a practice, so the podcast doesn’t grow or develop in any ways. It’s always stuck in the same rut, like your friends from high school that didn’t change in the 20 years since. The best episodes are in the beginning, and those are all behind a paywall. It’s still not worth paying to get over that wall. There’s better comedy and better music reviews and retrospectives out there.

Missed hearing new old blue eyes and I knew where to find him. Not really into the music talk but just needed to hear his sexy voice one more time😢. Maybe you should start up a football pod again someday…until then my friend, heed the call!

    Heed the Call
Born in 1984, so listening illegally. As many on here, discovered this pod through the ATN universe, and my fondness for Tug Boat. Bob and Dan like U2 a little much for my liking, and their Prince takes are criminal, however I will go to bat for anyone who will champion Oasis as much as Dan. All jokes aside, this is a fun music pod to rediscover a bunch of fun, and very fun bad, tunes. It has gotten me through a hero-less summer.

    Can’t sink the Tugboat
Add me to the list of fanboys flocking to and fro for their Old Zuser/Big Daddy Rich/New Old Blue Eyes fix. Sad it took this long for me to land here. Glad to have a great backlog to dive into.

    Madferrit!
I found out the unfortunate news about ATN yesterday so that was a bummer. But happily I found this podcast while trying to figure out what happened. I was always stoked when Dan would talk about music (especially Oasis) so I’m happy that I now have a podcast of just him talking about a subject and era I love. You’ve got a fan here and I’m excited to follow your solo career!

    A refuge for Hanzus fans
Longtime ATN listener and started listening to this because I’m such a fan of Dan’s podcast skills and am gutted by the cancelling of ATN. As a big rock fan, I love their talks (especially the hair metal power ballads). Do a Metallica or Black Sabbath episode!!!
  • Agent_olive
    Bob hates Weird Al
Pod talks about Weird Al so much that Dan thinks there's already been an episode. The second there's a Patreonie level to pick an episode album, I'm heading right to my local Coin Star. Until then, I'll be raising barns and leaving one star reviews. (Updated to add that I wrote this like 6 or 7 years ago idk. Still no Al. Sadge.)

    I feel enlightened
This is like two wine masters, sommeliers, talking about wine, not necessarily you or me arguing if I like Burgundy or Bordeaux better.

    Great show!
I was born in 1981 and feel like I’m reliving my youth with you guys! Please keep the episodes coming! Can’t tell you how much I enjoy it! Live throwing copper is a masterpiece.

Beavis and Butthead for the Podcast Generation
Been a listener since day 1, but I just realized why I love the show so much. It’s Beavis and Butthead for the podcast generation. For the record, I was born in ‘92.

    Almost perfect…
Great show, but I don’t understand most of the references since I was born in 1982.

    Excellent and Hilarious
Dans insight, pacing, and delivery delivery are perfect. Bob Lastname also brings hilarious commentary. It’s amazing that 2 doods in a garage could produce such an entertaining show. Their collective memory and story telling keep the show consistent. How is it possible that a free podcast better than West World season 2? Put it on the board.

The only thing keeping me alive at work
This podcast is a lifesaver. So fun to listen to these two guys talk in their garage like no one is listening. Keep it up! 🤝 Update: I like this podcast so much I started relistening to episodes *on accident*
  • rnhansen
    Are they actually halfway trying?
I was thrown for a bit of a loop with the hair metal pt 1 episode where it was clear than Dan had done at least a bit of basically googling before they hit record in order to have the VH1 BTM clips to play. Effort looks good on these guys, but it’s always a little surprising to hear (e.g. Be Here Forever Oasis episode)

    Mount Rushmore
This has to be on the Rushmore of podcasts about music for people born exactly in 1980, who have 69 top 5 songs of all time. I had a great time listening to 2 friends reminisce about how music transports you to other times in life. I didn’t quite have the same taste but will say that Bob and Dan introduced me to many albums that I completely missed in my life. Thanks for the hours and hours of wasted time. Oh and I also found a pretty decent football podcast through this great music pod.

    My favorite pod
I’m way out of the 1980 sweet spot (I’m born 95) but this pod is great and has turned me on to a ton of music. Bob and Dan are hilarious (keep the Live bit going. Puppy scruff!) and have great taste— even if they miss the boat when it comes to Prince.
  • CoolKidKev
    Put it on the board.
By far, the mainstream media’s best and foremost authority on what really happened on that fateful Tuesday. Easily the best 9/11 podcast on iTunes! You’re close boys - don’t stop now. We’re listening, bring it home.

    Excellence
I’m not creative enough to write a review where I interweave some themes or inside jokes from the show, so I’ll just say thanks for the rad episodes.

Good Content Undercut by Sophomoric Humor
Just what the title says—these two are prime examples of middle-aged white guys trapped in the wrong decade. Not sure how wise it is to put so much problematic content in a public space. If you want 15 minutes of lewd, crass, offensive, misogynistic banter to start your day, this podcast is for you.

I thought there would be less male nudity. I knew there would be some, just not this much.

    Maybe I Don’t Get It?
A 42-year old friend in my sleigh riding club brought this podcast to my attention because he said I’d enjoy it as a 9/11 and music enthusiast. The 9/11 stuff is great but maybe I’m a couple years too young to understand why someone would review 3 different Counting Crows albums before getting to anything by Rancid.
  • Spinnaker9
Hilarious look back at great 90s tunes
These guys are great old buddies who remind me of my friends from the 80s. This is a weirdly addictive podcast that reminds me of the glory days of my life and the music that was around back then.

    So good
This podcast makes me laugh more than anything else I listen to. Even if I’m not the target audience (female, born in the 90s) I still find it extremely enjoyable. Can’t wait for the return in the new year!

Born in ‘75, but I’m very immature. The songs and emotions you tap into really mirror my life.

    Yo!
I’m probably a few years younger than you fellas but these are all the jams I listened to growing up. Thanks for the show and commentary. BTW, I am a conservative and Trump supporter. So there you go. Keep it up fellas!

    Trump Supporter
Born in ‘81. ATN listener. I have listened to almost every throwback podcast episode. You mentioned Trump supporters on your last episode who are also throwback listeners. Just wanted you to know, we are out here. Me and some of my buddies love the show…. Will miss you boys during the hiatus!

    Great pod
Pod feels out of place in the music genre. Fits better in the historical category

Just listened to The Bends episode
I am absolutely stunned by the “rhythmic clapping” thing, I was caught totally off guard lol

    Give it a listen
Great podcast. Surprising amount of nudity.

Dude born between 78 and 81 in the burbs?
Still full of feels, angst and nostalgia from your moody teens and twenties? This is the pod for you. I still have a guilty addiction to Oasis albums like Be Here Now so this hits on every angle. Stick with it Bob and Dan, enjoying listening to the pod and the playlist.
  • Jamosen94
    A fun time
I keep listening even though I’m 26 and they tell my age group to stop cause it’s not for us.
  • BobbysWarhammer
    Amazing but not perfect
The real star of this show is Jason Zumwalt. I may never forgive Big Daddy Rich if the tale of his sexual awakening never hits the airwaves.

    Better Than You’d Expect
These guys do a great job with what they have. Dan is very funny, and you’d never believe Bob is a comedian, but they overcome his dullness in an amazing way. Kudos. While mostly about music, their homoerotic relationship shines through nicely, making this a good progressive podcast and a solid under the radar LGBT option.

Best Pocast Out There For Rock Music Fans Born in 1980
Funny enough I was born in December 1979 yet I still get the majority of their references. All kidding aside people born in later 1979 and early 1981 should also enjoy this. Seriously though this podcast is so funny. People in my neigborhood can't understand why I crack up so much while mowing my lawn. These guys are hilarious and I have gone back to listen to so much music I had forgotten about. Some of the best shows also are the ones about music that isn't in their wheelhouse. Also they are both total cowards for not doing an episode about the 1st Arctic Monkeys album. What are you chicken ...bok...bok..bok
  • Daire Barefoot
    Hilarious
Great podcast with incredibly entertaining hosts. Matchbox 20 episode had me dying.
  • joijoi
    My new nostalgia obsession
They have a definite appreciation of music of the 90s. They’re in touch with what life was like then. Their history of friendship helps, I don’t mind their inside jokes because they have such joy sharing them.

The best Limp Bizkit podcast out there
If you are like me and your favorite song is No Sex by Limp Bizkit then you will love this podcast.
  • A fellow scientist
Don’t let the Limp Bizkit fool you
Very niche, but hits hard with late gen xers and elder millennials. Perfect mix of (mostly) good music, fun banter, and nostalgia. I dont see it paying their mortgages, but I imagine it keeps the cooler full of Tecates.

    Amazing coincidence
One time I was listening to this podcast at Starbucks when I thought the barista looked familiar. I asked where I knew him from, and he said he played Jewel’s boyfriend in the “Foolish Games” video. This was particularly eerie because at that exact moment Bob and Dan were talking about Jewel’s teeth. I think the guy was jerking my chain, but still...pretty nuts.

Just gave one star because I’m a bit of a contrarian. Do Sepultura or Rammstein.

Born in 1980 - review by Phil Baker
Hi guys, found the podcast about a year ago looking for something to listen to about the Strokes. Been working my way through the back catalogue since then. Highlights include the 2004 radio playlist episode, Be Here Forever and the fact that you forgot to cover The Bends in a show about The Bends (bonus episode?). If you do read out this review please say hi to my beautiful wife April. We enjoyed listening to your 1987 countdown episode on a recent road trip.

These guys are so good, that I once referred to them as friends of mine during a conversation with a friend of mine. Go **** Yourself.
