    Terrific listening
Love listening to the two hosts. Not pretentious, insightful, informative and entertaining. Good pacing of the episodes and overall an excellent podcast show about architects and cool buildings.

the best architecture podcast in my humble opinion
you guys are sharp!! insightful, engaging, informative, fun! you get into the nitty gritty and you do such a good job of taking a wholistic view of your topic and connecting lots of disparate ideas and making them cohesive. i learn a lot and my architectural vocabulary had benefited greatly. i don’t even listen on the apple podcast app i literally downloaded it just to write this review because spotify doesn’t let you write one. keep it up! i’m tuned in!

Learn About Building Architecture and Architects and Culture
This show is entertaining and engaging. They hosts look at building architecture through case studies of important architects such as GaudÍ and Scarpa. Plus there are book reviews like Gibson’s Neuromancer which focus on the spaces and buildings.

    Irreverent and deeply informed
One of the best podcasts I have ever listened to.

    Wonderful
This is a wonderful podcast. I am an architecture student whose curriculum is extremely design focused. This podcast is my self-assigned historical and theoretical supplement to that training and it succeeds completely. I imagine I would like it very much even if I were not a student, but probably not very much if I were not interested in buildings and cities. Lends itself to the curious, the armchair historian, and would be a splendid travel guide on a trip through Europe. Quality stuff. Thanks gents.

    Appreciation
I am a March student in Chicago and have been listening for some time now. Highly recommend for enjoyable content, review of topics, and relevant insights. Their enthusiasm for architecture helps when you feel burnt out.

Review based on discussion of Christopher Alexander’s work
Let me preface my comments in disclosing that I am not an architect and it has been some years since I read “A Pattern Language.” I also do not identify as a hippie. I agree with another reviewer that the commenters appear erudite and I’m sure they are competent within their profession. I was put off by their examination of Christopher Alexander’s books. They seem to derive pleasure in deriding and sneering at Alexander’s ideas that were put forth in the sixties, instead of approaching the books with an open mind. Yes, perhaps some of Alexander’s humanistic ideas and actual work have not fared well in the intervening years—which might be said of many architects. This is not a reason to discount his and his colleagues’ ideas entirely. What I got out of “A Pattern Language”—and I don’t believe I am alone—is that there are many ways in which people experience their environment and derive pleasure and joy. It is less about “rules” than identifing patterns that can be combined in many ways, not all at once, as some patterns lean towards more prospect and others are more refuge, for example. There are many patterns used in the design of my own house—I bought a house plan online that naturally incorporated patterns—not by rote, but as a well-designed house—and then modified the plan to suit my way of living and the building site. While many ideas put forth come from vernacular and historic ways of building and living in communities, I don’t believe Alexander’s ideas are exclusive to only traditional architecture. I see his ideas in the beautiful and spiritual buildings of Tadao Ando, for example, as well, where light and space are considered. There is great modern architecture and mediocre examples as well. The pedestrian examples of modern buildings forget the human element and result in, for example, a big public space where no one lingers. I was hoping for a more open-minded discussion of a variety of approaches to architecture—otherwise why bother?— instead of the smug and unfunny fare served up.

    Heavily Researched and Entertaining
Excellent podcast that is a fun listen. The guys are wildly informed and exceptional in identifying aspects of architecture in which even a non-architect could be interested.

    Great stuff
As far as I know there are only two architecture podcasts worth listening to, and this is by far the better of the two.

    A rich expansion
Great research and analysis. well informed criticism. History and theory unspoiled by the excessive credulity found in most architectural education and media. Very stimulating.

    Comments from Minnesota
I’m an architect by training and can’t get enough of this show. The visual details and history conveyed in every episode is phenomenal- not to mention George and Luke’s witty commentary. Highly recommend!

    Great content
    Really enjoy the content

Great Banter on a Range of Architectural Subjects
Luke and George have a great chemistry discussing a variety of architectural periods and styles, and I’m particularly a fan of how they interlace a bit of wit and comedy into their commentary. Using texts as a means of launching their discussions is also an appreciated approach, as it gives the listening a good reference for following up or following along with their discussions.

    Great Show
    Very insightful comments about architecture.

    Thoughtful and entertaining
I’m not aware of a better podcast centered on architectural design. It is extremely well done and entertaining. Can’t speak highly enough of it.

    Fun and interesting
I like these guys a lot. Super humble, descriptive, and positive!
  • enchantedcrock
    Virtuosic analysis
Slicing and dicing the wheat from the chaff of canonical built work, books, and films. A master class of information, critical thinking, and analysis from skeptical and ethical true believers.
  • Cal O'Boyle
    Hilariously Snobby + British
Hilariously snobby and British this conversational deconstruction of the literature of architecture is savage (though probably warranted) but most of all a heart warming, smart, and screwball appreciation of ideas in and around the built world.
  • Neo-peasant
    Just great!
George and Luke are incredibly fun to listen to. Yes I’m an architecture nerd, but their podcast touches on film, graphic novels, urban design, Renaissance art and connects things in ways I haven’t thought about before.

    It's lovely
It is. Even if you know nothing about architecture I would reccomend if only to see how one might go about falling in love with a subject.

Is one of the host eating something?????

    Tremendous Fun
I was looking for a podcast to buff up my XX century architectural history - came for the Le Corbusier series, stayed for the Ann Rand & Akira. I appreciate the practical angle that the podcast brings into conversations about history of architecture and urban planning, but still remains very entertaining and accessible. I love it when you guys are mean to building projects! (and when you love them)
  • ezachos
Nest architecture podcast I’ve heard yet
Fantastic content, and very engaging presentation. I learned much of this stuff decades ago—bet it would’ve stuck better if I’d heard it from these two. Plus, where does all this fascinating supporting anecdotal info come from?! Love it.
  • Idodots
    Lighthearted and Interesting
This is the only podcast about architecture theory I have found thus far, so it's great that I actually really enjoy it. If you're very precious about the pillars of architectureal theory like Le Corbusier and you don't want to hear criticism of them then you will probably hate this show. However, if you'd like an accessible discussion of these topics (and others!) then give it a shot! I've been going back and raiding the archives while working on projects.

Two thumbs down for the narrators...
Couple of podcasters that spend way too much time talking over each other and trashing the book; we got it in the first five minutes - you hate the book, you hate the concepts and you hate the concept. Got it. Thanks If that’s your schtick great; if that’s not your intent you might want to rethink how you approach a podcast.
  • clemencyturnip
    Hilarious, erudite, perfect comedic timing
One of my favorite podcasts, you two are sublime. Can you do a series on architectural films? Belly of the Architect, Mama Roma, The Burning Child? On William Golding’s The Spire?
  • charlotte1812
    Definitely favourite podcast
I love architecture, and regularly rely on this podcast for company and high quality commentary. Since I started listening it has become the only podcast I can enjoy unequivocally. It can get a bit male-centric sometimes, but that's not really Luke & George's fault.
  • Darthyourvader
    Nonsensical blabber
Accidentally found these guys and listened to their review of Ayn Rand’s The Fountainhead. Boy, intellectually philosophical topics are not your cup of tea, huh? I’m baffled at their lack of comprehension of the book’s premise and mischaracterization of all the character and Ayn Rand. Definitely not worth subscribing.

    Bloody Brilliant
I listen to this podcast each morning at my Firm before the day gets rolling and thoroughly enjoy the podcasts. They inspire me to research more into the subjects they bring to the table and are pretty humorous. If you haven’t seen there instagram either it has wonderful content. Cheers!
  • Stourleyk
    Witty badinage
If, as an architect, you are stuck in an office of prosaic types and pedestrian projects, weep no more. Put on your headphones and imagine yourself at the table where these insightful persons give architecture a fighting chance.

    Inspiring
Most of this is way over my head, but as someone who’s been listening for several years, I can say that this podcast has drug my out of my architectural burnout and changed the course of my career. I’ve returned to school to peruse a masters degree in architectural history (probably) because of this podcast. Thanks Luke & George
  • Leo XIV
    Fascinating show
As an engineering consultant, I spend quite a lot of time complaining to the architects I work with for one reason or another. I haven’t one complaint for John and Luke. The show is quite good and I recommend it to folks everywhere I go. Keep it up!
  • kincaidedward8
    Great Deep Architecture Talk
Probably the least colloquial podcast that I regularly listen to, but in a good way.

    Great Insight on Architecture
Excellent criticism and very enjoyable discussion of a wide breadth of ideas, buildings, and figures relevant to design, Architecture, and the creation of our contemporary world!

Quickly has become my favorite podcast
This has quickly become my favorite podcast! It is insightful but not too self-serious. Thank you for making it!
  • songaia2
    great pod
I love this show - I have no background or even particularly strong interest in architecture, but this show makes it fascinating, and gets into much deeper questions, while also opening up a wonderful and strange world of detail.

    Addictive
I have become a non-stop listener of your podcasts since discovering the series a few weeks ago. It’s almost like being back in architecture school. Love your approach to the wide range of topics relying on literary and cinematic renditions of “the architectural project.” They have been inspired jumping off places for my own contemplations of for instance, “Junkspace” which I wade through every morning on my commute to lower Manhattan. As you have requested suggestions for topics, why not explore the career and work of James Stirling. He was a big man in his day, but no one talks about him anymore. His work transforms from somewhat constructivist modernism through an awkward post-modernism to something akin to the styles of English Pop, something off the sets of Patrick McGoowan, “The Prisoner.” You night also draw upon current English psychogeographers, Iain Sinclair, Will Self and the like for some interesting approaches

    Supremely enjoyable
Talking about architecture in an insightful way and making it entertaining is about as difficult a task as any in the podcasting world have taken on. These blokes have done it.

Great podcast! A relatable and conversational podcast on architectural theory. You can tell these guys really seem to enjoy doing this.

To inform and delight, is the mission of Art- and this podcast!

    Informative AND entertaining
A great podcast series for architects (and I assume that non-architects would be quite entertained by it as well)! Very interesting topics that range from contemporary (Herzog & DeMuron) to classical (Michelangelo). Great range and the podcasters make each subject engaging. Great to hear a non-American perspective on architecture. The Fountainhead episodes are perfect!
  • Evanboris
    Unbelievably great
An intercourse of insight and dry humor. Plus the hosts have really mastered English. Easily the best podcast for architecture, urbanism and design enthusiasts. I can't tell apart Luke and George yet but I hope that time will come.
  • spcaliente
    Thank you chums
I've been supremely entertained by this podcast. It's witty, snarky, sexy, and informed. it melds all the things I like, cities, architecture, theory and history. More biographies on oversexed modernists please!
  • llan beuno
    A very fertile constraint
I’ve never rated a podcast before, but I’ve also never realized how much I love listening to descriptions of gray Ballardian ooze seeping from exposed commercial infrastructure! I’d love to hear episodes about Piranesi and Soviet Constructivism, in the future. Thanks you both!
  • TsarJoe
    Delightful and fascinating.
Having tried nearly every architecture related podcast, I feel that About Buildings + Cities is the best of the lot. Engaging, erudite hosts, fun and free flowing conversations, and a wonderful variety of topics from in and around architecture, these episodes merit repeated listening.

    Fantastic!
An elaborate, poetic, and inspiring project. This program is a real treat for anyone interested in learning about architecture and design. Luke and George provide generous and compelling commentary on buildings, history, and many colorful characters. I especially appreciate their readings. Thanks so much for this gem!

Educational, Erudite, Articluate and Loads of Fun.
Read the Fountainhead at age 11, was completely enthralled by the strange adult world. I'm 58 now and laughed so hard at myself tears came to my eyes.
