Just found this podcast!! And I looove it!! It inspired me to make my own podcast about reviews a little bit more structured! Thank you guys!! I love hearing everyone’s POV.

Mildly entertaining / good background noise, but way too long. Hosts meander, no clear structure to conversations.

I found the content interesting and the movie analysis compelling. However, while I tend to be fairly tolerant of podcast hosts with vocal fry - a habit/tic of an entire generation - the vocal fry displayed by one of the hosts is so grating and intense it felt like a parody of vocal fry. The vocalizations were so distracting that I couldn’t concentrate on the content, which is unfortunate because they were having a great discussion on “Juror #2.” I would either suggest the host hire a voice coach or the podcast find a new host. This is not ableism, as vocal fry is not an innate characteristic - it’s a cultural habit that can be unlearned with hard work. Unfortunately, not every voice is fit for radio, and for the first time in my entire life, I had to stop listening after 30 minutes due to vocal fry.

I tried to listen to the episode on Anora. Within the first few minutes, they throw it to this Dan Bayer person…. I could only last a few seconds before I turn it off. My goodness, his vocal fry and voice sound like an SNL parody of an NPR show. I’m very interested in movie reviews, but I can’t with this.

On the “A Real Pain” episode, one of the hosts compares the election to the Holocaust, which might be the dumbest thing ever said. If I were Jewish, I would be so wildly offended by such a stupid comment like that. I don’t think I’ll be listening to this show again.

Please get a de-esser!!! It makes it so hard to listen to even though I find these episodes very interesting - so much so that I skip a lot of the episode or don’t watch it altogether depending on the guest. I’m not alone in this. On the content - I don’t always agree with the reviews and I think the contributor selections can be much more inclusive but overall I still very much enjoy hearing their views. Exception is Elemental - did not like that episode as there were contributors with Asian or immigrant backgrounds, so the reviews were a total miss for me.

Interviews the costume designer for babylon, she explains that they searched for the weirdest clothing from that time period. Then y’all complain that the clothing wasn’t the typical clothing from that era on a separate review podcast….

Most of the reviewers are bad- those who can't do podcast I guess. I have started to skip any podcast with Dan- nothing is good enough for him.

Whenever I hear his name I draw a deep sigh. He’s genuinely annoying. It’s how he talks.

Normally I like the discussions, but I admit that I don’t listen if Dan Bayer is a guest. I try to ignore the vocal fry and upspeak, but I just find it too grating.

Seriously, for the love of god. For as long as these podcasts are and all the topics y’all go over. PLEASE give us time stamps.

I mostly enjoy the podcast but I agree with others that Dan Bayer degrades the conversations he participates in. His giggling is over the top; he sounds like Cesar Romero’s Joker half the time, regardless of the conversation and he rarely offers anything constructive. More diversity of perspectives would really help this podcast and scope.

The book “Dune” as NOT written 10 years ago. It was published in 1965!! 🤦🏻‍♀️ I will given you a pass if you did not time to read 600+ page book but get the fact correct. But to quote you “put in the work”!!

Found Zone of Interest to be a modern masterpiece so was inspired to dig into podcasts about the film and stumbled across this one. Dan Bayer is CRINGE!!!! Particularly hard to listen to when he has a big windup re the meaning of something - infrared use, title - and then proceeds to sound like a small child with his ideas. I feel bad for the other 2 who have to humor him. I’d remove him from the podcast in order to heighten seriousness of the show.

Do you even watch/pay attention to the films before reviewing them?

Oh man you all are awsome. Great show/ production is really all there Only chiming in b/c man I can’t believe we disagree about saltburn. In my opinion this film was about the study of a psychopath. And it nailed it. The awkward dinner encounter, strange family reunion + lies about college life. Totally agree when you touched on the non “eat the rich” / weird to imply the ultra elite would use this as a warning sign. Anyway thanks for making a wonderful show. Love listening to you all. I don’t write many reviews so if anyone is searching my rating this show is top notch, I just loved this particular film and wanted to chime in lol

NBP is my favorite podcast. Everyone celebrates film in a way that is positive and leaves space for every opinion and voice to be heard. I think Matt has created something really special. I love listening to the episodes when they drop!

So I came for the young mazino interview, and I found it somewhat condescending and a little phoned in. The questions felt very “ok I need to write questions, let’s get through them,” but I’m not sure, they also could have been nervousness. Either way it felt oddly rushed. I don’t know if this is a criticism of the interviewer or the show. The end was the most human the interviewer felt to me.

I used to enjoy NBP, but as of late the reviews have become stale and predictable. I think the film Twitter crowd is becoming more homogeneous and the commentary is just becoming one big soup of the same exact takes. I think the pod would benefit from a new co-host or mandating more opposing takes on each film to avoid monotony. I also just find the format overlong, with each person going into too much unneeded superfluous comments about each director or actor.

After being a devoted listener to TBP podcast for so many years I finally had to hang up kmy hat. The two hosts come ill prepared, gripe and complain constantly, and seemingly hate the Oscar’s and everything cinema. So refreshing that this past awards season I found NBP Podcast as you guys are wonderful and knowledgeable cinephiles and show up having done your homework. Also THANK YOU for the praise on the 95th Oscar’s - it was so well produced and deserved critics good praises (again as opposed to TBP where the whined about the show for 2 hours). I hate to compare the two but I do this only for those who are like me, searching for a replacement and reliable movie podcast. This is IT. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

This podcast has everything a movie lover but more specifically a fan of the Oscars could ever want! Great analysis and balance of reviews, interviews and commentary.

The host, Matt really struggles with words that begin or even contain the letters “T” and “V”. I found his voice and pronunciation problems unbearable. Having to hear him say “Da” instead of “The” or “Wif” instead of “With” dozens of times throughout an episode made me want to die.

At one point, NBP was my most listened to podcast of the year, and I listen to a lot of podcasts. It is with a heavy heart that I write this review. But there are several ways in which the podcast has developed that has fundamentally altered the listening experience. There is a (strong and growing) disconnect when everyone on the podcast is able to watch dozens of films for free and early for press — and the film fans who listen. The disconnect between that level of access and average film fans who listen is palpable and significantly impacts the listening experience. Moreover, I’ve noticed a number of times when the podcast discounts safety on film sets in favor of preserving film itself. I love film. NBP listeners love film. But when this podcast chooses to make commentary on the industry & filmmaking process, basic safety needs to be considered. And this podcast fails to do so. The biggest example was when the podcast discussed the Rust tragedy, two weeks after it occurred, when answering a user question. The podcast talked more about the cost it would place on independent films to implement policies that would prevent future incidents than the actual incident itself. That is a value statement I cannot get behind. Safety on film sets should be an a priori issue, and this line of commentary was disheartening. Another striking example is when Matt complained vehemently that CGI fire will never look as good as real fire (I believe in discussing Those Who Wish Me Dead). Fire is so insanely dangerous, and I, as a film lover, would much rather keep the people who make films safe and maybe notice the slight difference in the final film’s visuals (also CGI fire CAN look great, as in Dune…). It is deeply saddening this podcast’s hosts would not feel the same way. Lastly, the podcast’s assessment of the economics of the industry is out of touch. I noticed this most when the podcast host/guests ranted about No Way Home’s box office. It’s fine to not like the movie. But its box office was a godsend for so many struggling movie theatre owners. To not notice or comment on the many long-running theatres that have closed is ignorant. 2020 was brutal. 2021 was slightly better for theatre owners. 2022 is improving, but theatres are not out of the woods yet. I would expect a podcast made by people who care about the long-term prospect of the theatre experience to address the topic with more nuance than they did.

Not enough knowledge of film history or proper critique shown to make this worth listening to - gave it a chance but it really isn’t very interesting

This show is also filled with passive aggressive racism. I hate the people on this podcast. They have annoying voices and they sound like a bunch of nerds. All they do is worship people in Hollywood (mainly white people). There’s barely any in depth analysis and constructive criticism on the movies and tv shows that they talk about. They do not analyze anything. Their views are TRASH.

Recently started listening, as a lover of cinema, who often ends up watching movies alone I love hearing other’s thoughts. Also realizing how much I like to critique movies!

This a really great podcast with pretty immaculate reviews and great insight into the filmmaking process and really breaking down the components of film. But to be completely honest, Cody Derricks deserves his own 5 star review for being an icon ⭐️

I absolutely love this podcast. The knowledge of the commentators are encyclopedic level of film history and present. The banter is spirited, and even when disagreeable, respectful and based in experienced opinion. I love movies and I have so much fun listening to these discussions to validate or decimate my own thoughts! You are all doing great work and I thank you. Let’s keep the spirit of movie experiences alive!!

Long time listener, started with seven film podcasts and now only do NBP (outside of queer/BIPOC podcast that sometimes touch film). I would really appreciate if there was more effort for diversifying opinion, especially women of color. It fills like the film industry is doing a lot to diversify and as a long time listener, NPB would finally begin to walk-the-walk and evolve a bit as well.

I love doing this exercise where I watch a movie sit with for a couple of hours form a review in my head and then read what NBP has to say about it and they never let me down. They’ll always highlight something I missed or just show me a different way of looking at it. Always trust in Matt!

I’ve been such a fan of NBP and it’s become not only one of my favorite resources for keeping up with awards season but also for listening to their discussions/reviews. I appreciate the variety of viewpoints and the commitment they have to lifting up films that deserve more exposure!

Matt, my one suggestion is just consider altering your grading scale. If a movie gets an eight, I don’t care if it’s a soft eight, or a “very, very strong eight.” Even allowing a half mark would create for a better system. I hope you’ll consider this.

What’s with the Taylor hate? He’s written one bad movie - Without Remorse - and as we all know, you can make a bad movie out of a good script... ....can’t make a good movie out of a bad one. Sicario 2 was a good script. Also a sequel - not many great sequels out there. Very hard to write. Give the man the break!

I enjoy the commentary, but I do agree with the reviews that say the show could use a little late diversity. I would really love to hear more from some non white women! It’s a good show though, I recommend it.

Who are these “critics?” They sound like a gaggle of valley girls talking about the surfer boys on the beach that day. To be taken seriously, grow up.

The NBP podcast is a fantastic show, I look forward to their weekly schedule of interviews and reviews, and their Sunday rundowns of news and upcoming films. Matt and Co. are brilliant and down to earth. Highly recommend!

Really enjoy the podcast. I do think it would be beneficial to add more women and people of color to your team to diversify a bit and give more room for new opinions and viewpoints. Hoping to see more of that in 2021!

The host, Matt I think, declared that the film doesn’t let us know what happened to other characters, like Vera or Lucas, when in fact it is precisely with a reunion that the film end, grownup Lucas coming home to his two mums, who have survived the war and have lived together. It’s a pity, because in general the podcast is good.

Do you guys watch the films before reviewing them? There is no originality in these reviews and some details are plainly wrong. It was so frustrating to sit through an episode.

Isn’t the title “The Next Best Movie”? All 3 reviewers (didn’t count Sara Clements since she only whined out 3 sentences). In review of DR Pollocks “The Devil all the Time”- didn’t they do any research? Pollock writes of the misery of dirt towns in East Ohio. Nothing good ever happens. Look at Opioid abuse in Ohio, Kentucky and West Virginia and figure it out. Like Wes Anderson films are an acquired taste - so too is Pollock novels.

Didn’t mind their analysis, which struck me as incisive and smart. But I heard a spoiler I wasn’t prepared for. It’s possible they gave a spoiler warning and I didn’t hear it while I was in the middle of something else. But Filmspotting does a much better job of avoiding spoilers as well as structuring the show.

So they started to talk about Tenet. Great- they liked it, or didn’t, saw it, or not. And started to talk about the spectacle of the film, and then complained that it would be better if it was a YouTube POV. F*** you. If you want a YouTube POV watch ‘Harry hardcore’. Your ‘criticism’ of the film is that it isn’t Instellar. Plug in Starfox with 99 lives cheat code and let it loop, you’ll die 100 times.

I love this podcast for a plethora of reasons. Always incredibly informative, clearly passionate about the topic, and the guests are always great! Matt and the NBP team are all awesome, and this is an easy listen for newcomers to film and cinephiles!
